Keeping a consistent look/style

#1

Hi,

I have been working on a 2d point and click adventure game, where I have to paint more than 100 detailed backgrounds.:scream:

However my problem is that I don’t know how to keep all the backgrounds consistent. I want all the paintings to have the same overal style and look. My problem is that I keep learning new techniques and methods to paint, because it’s such a long proces. So my style keeps changing all the time.

Í dont want to sacrifice the detail to make it look stylized or cartoony looking. These have to be semi-realistic high detailed photoshop paintings.

my question is, what aspects gives art a consistent look? is it the brushstrokes, the colors…?
You guys have any tips to achieve this?

thanks
Kam

It’s definitely a combination of different elements. I’d say:

  1. Dynamic range (some artists uses very narrow dynamic range for more drama, for example).
  2. Color choices (most artists have very individual styles when it comes to color choices).
  3. Edges (Some artists have harder edges, some have more variety of different edges…etc).
  4. Rendering style (Some like ovbious brushwork, some like things smooth, some like specific type of brushes for brushwork…etc). This includes use of textures as well.
  5. Line quality (If you’re working with line drawings too, this is also a factor. Thin lines, thick lines, tapering lines, smooth lines, rough lines, lots of lines, very few lines, angular lines, curvy lines, broken lines, clean lines…etc).
  6. Lighting (Some artists have a signature look to how they light any scene).
  7. Composition (Some artists have very unique sense of composition).
  8. Shapes (Some artists like to make everything slightly angular, or exaggerate certain features, or favor certain shapes over others…etc). This also leads to design. Some people will always design architecture in a certain style, or spaceships, characters, creatures…etc. Kawamori Shoji is a good example–you can almost always tell if he designed the mecha in an anime show. Same thing with Syd Mead.
  9. Subject matter (Some people are like one-trick poneys. All they do is variations upon essentially the same image or same theme over and over and over).
