"Just Cause 2 trailer" effect

#1

So, I have been trying to learn After Effects for a while, but now I actually have something to do with it. I am making a promo video for my robotics team, which involves showing off all of it’s features.

I was hoping to be able to use the same sort of effect as in this series of trailers:

However, I have no idea of where to start! Can either someone point me to a relevant tutorial, or tell me how to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Start by duplicating your footage twice and time freezing the copies.

Precompose them both into one new composition.

First take the upper layer of footage and mask off your forground object. This will allow you to scale it independantly. Looks like that trailer has a drop shadow on this layer.

On the background, make a large circular mask to vignette and darken the edges. Feather the mask to make it nice and gradual.

The banding look on the background can be done with transition>Venetian Blinds. You can do this either on the background layer, or make a new solid just above it with venetian blinds, and set its blending mode to multiply, soft light, or something.

A little bit of color correction and voila!

He has a few tutorials on shattering and putting things together. Like tuts 86 and 104 might be able to give you a good start. It really depends on how detailed you want to get if you are referring to the portion of the video with the logo coming together from shards.

On other thing would be to explode your logo with the shatter plug in and then just time reverse it… Just a few ideas to get you started
