A small update on the Rift character before I go to bed.

Hi Juho,
For the Rift boss, I am not sure if you are aware that it is supposed to be “a massive, 10-story colossus”. Also, which of the 6 planar themes (earth, fire, water, air, life, or death) are you going with?
I like those vehicle studies, and it’s awesome that you are so motivated to improve your 2d skills. I am personally going to learn 3d to break into the industry as a modeler or an animator, but I want to continue working in 2d on my own to get into concept art some day.
I went to a cg event called Anomaly last October, and one of the presentations was made by guys at ArenaNet/Futureploy. One thing they said about concept art is that “mega competitive is a mega understatement.” They actually recommended getting into the industry as a modeler and using your position within the industry to gradually switching over to 2d. If you think about it, there is no shortage of talent out there, and many amazing 2d artists get by doing freelance work.
I wish you best of luck and hope you stay motivated, but just wanted to say that getting into the game industry with 2d might be harder than doing it with 3d.
Heozart:
Thanks for the warning. I’m pretty scared as it is, and hate competing, but what can I do but just keep pushing? It came down to specializing on one thing, and 2D is what I love the most. Getting into the game industry isn’t easy anyways. I’m going to try to be an over all 2D dude, not just concept art, but also texturing, UI-art and stuff like that. I can only hope I won’t fail miserably and draw like a madman.
The Rift character is a giant, I thought she wouldn’t be the biggest colossus out there, but would spawn a lot of enemies, that would be her thing. As she is a plane of life monster. She would even clone the players to fight agains themselves in a way.
Quick digital version of one of the pencil pieces I did yesterday:

I let the Rift character itself rest for today and started designing an environment around her. I was thinking of maybe making the stone under her a bit more like a throne of some kind. I still have to fill it up with a lot more foliage.

Thanks man, comments like that were a big factor in getting me to school in my old sketchbook here, so maybe they’ll help me to get a job too
Haven’t posted for a few days as I had to do a sample work for Sulake, it’s a game company. I actually got into an interview, so I guess it didn’t suck that bad
And I didn’t want to post the sample thing, because the last time I posted work related stuff people warned me about copy rights related things.
Now I just try to polish some of my 2D work for the interview, as they are considering me for the position of Junior Graphic Designer. Sulake has a bit different style from what I’m used to do though. It’s really simple pixel art, but I think I could do that just fine, at least the sample was good enough, so I can only hope…
Here’s an old piece I’m trying to polish for my portfolio:

Just a little update to the last thing. I have my graduation tomorrow so I have to go to bed early.

Damn weekend wasted, I didn’t draw almost at all :C
And the interview is getting closer, I really need to have something great to show them. It’s awesome they liked the sample I did, but I want to make a good impression.
Update on the rift environment thing.

Thanks man, I guess it helped because I got the job!
They called me something like 2 hours after the interview and told me I can start as soon as they get me a computer :D/

Thanks a lot! I’ve learned that it’s all about not giving up
Almost skipped painting tonight, but managed to compromise myself into random doodling. I searched Youtube for a Kevin Smith interview and randomly took screenshots which I then painted. At least I drew something…

Damn, I’m slowing down, have to pick up the pace.
Last week started with a 3 day lecture by Teemu Haila from HighScore. We formed groups of 1-3 and tried to make a game in those three days. I paired up with a coder and we started making a space ship shooter. I think it went ok, we had to scale our concept down a lot and it became just a space ship racer when we had first thought it would be similar to the scene in Star Wars: New Hope, where they fly through the valley and enemies would jump from every direction. We ended up with a game where you just have to try not to hit the walls, but we got it working and it was fun

I modeled the ship and a lot of environments of which we only had time to put a small part into the game.
Thursday work started at Sulake, I haven’t done much yet, just got to know people and played Habbo Hotel
Friday was the firms summer party, so I guess I picked the right time to start there, it was really fun, everyone seems really nice.
I also gave up on my Rift colossus character and turned it in, I know I’m not going to win any prices, but it got me painting so it’s all good.

Hello everybody.
I just started my work day browsing through my old sketchbook thread and it got me a bit misty-eyed. I really can’t thank you guys enough. Where would I be without the help I got here.
Most of my time painting now days is spent at work and as I can’t publish any of it I haven’t posted much. Just thought I’d do a quick update.
I got a permanent job at Sulake and doing pixel art here has been pretty great. I still try to improve my comic and 3d skills, and I still kind of dream of being a comic book artist at Marvel someday. I have limited time to draw at home as my daughter is old enough to cause some serious mayhem, but I think I’ll survive
The studies at GamePro are going nicely too. It’s clear that the program is mostly directed to coders, but I’m getting to know a lot of other people there who also work in the game industry, which is great.
Anyways, just bumped into the heart warming things some of you guys have said to me during the last 5 years and wanted to say something about it.
Thanks vicmonty and Manaia! That’s exactly what I was talking about. God you guys are awesome :3
Hey Jho
Wow it’s been ages since I visited (been far too tied up with work and life for my own good…)
You’re a proud dad! Congratulations that is fabulous!
:applause: And you got a job… :buttrock: and your work is jumping along in leaps and bounds! :arteest: So great to see, I’m glad I finally found my way back here to say hello!
:wavey: a.
Frejasphere: Always a pleasure. Glad to hear from you, I haven’t visited your sb in ages either.
Someone suggested this one site where you can draw croquis http://lovecastle.org/draw/. It’s pretty great, and I’ve spent some time there now that school is over and I don’t get my weekly dose. It’s drawing from pictures, not from life, so it’s not as good but at least I’m drawing something. I try to get a scanner working soon, but for now here’s the only think I can post. One of the pictures I was drawing 1 per minute. Just decided to paint this one a bit further, I’m not sure if I’ll continue working on it, it’s not supposed to be anything other that just a study.
