and these last two are DSG doodles i recently contributed. i think the black rose lady is sth. that i will invest some time into, mainly because i feel i really need to practise painting fabrics, and the dress she is wearing presents a good opportunity for that. comments and crits most welcome, thanks for checking in,
best,
Jan

okay, he didnt really do the spiderman thing in that last collection of gesture drawings…
anyways, also did some hand studies, some are from the book of a hundred hands, some are…my paws.

and …taadaaa, it’s the old master wif his bunnies

jpedro, your sketch work from the life drawing class is great. Really nice rhythm and gesture quality to your line art.
wow awesome pencil skills, like dh said, the life drawing sketches have a nice flow. very good
Daniel, thanks for stopping by. i go to this life drawing class whenever time permits. unfortunately, it’s only once a week on a tuesday night, and tere’s no real teaching there, which is a bummer. but it still helps tremendously and i really enjoy it.
Vahn, thanks to you too. i liked the last creature sketches in your thread, and the “chicken thing” cracked me up
just a mini update today showing my last DSG entry, for the “red shoes” topic:

best, Jan
started this out in my sketchbook for the “white knight” dsg, totally lost track of time on that one though, so i guess i’ll just keep that one in here.

Hey Jan, first of all your sketches are awesome, nice flow and linework. I’ve just browsed your thread and I particularly like the lifedrawing ones.
For a crit I think you should practice women’s faces (life or photo ref). I’ve noticed they have two looks: the sexy dumb elvish look, with the eyes very tilted and far apart, tiny nose and triangular face, or the mean, menacing look with squinted eyes beneath an exaggerated brow. Both okay, but I find that your careful body sketches show much more depth and love for the subject. I think for example the black rose would tremendously improve with a less crudely comic-style face.
Anyway you got the skills down, just describing the emotional effect those faces have on me (sounds more serious than I mean:)). Keep drawing man!
heya maladie,
first off, really cool you took the time to browse through my humble little thread, and also for giving a crit. i have really strong comic-style influences though, therefore i don’t think i will ever go the completely realistic route (except for practicing, which you’re right, i need to, i’ll always have to…
)
i probably won’t change the black rose (style wise )much though, since i am quite happy with that one concerning her face and expression. as far as realism goes in the black rose pic, i think i will want textures and costume to be very detailed and somewhat realistic, but not necessarily her facial features.
heck, i’m just hoping to finish the damn thing at some point;) as far as expressions and my ladies faces go in general, i’ve got more going to be sure, it just so happens that i like that lifted eyebrow-thing a lot, as well as tilted eyes…so yeah, got me
best,
Jan
Hehe, gotcha!
Hey, I didn’t mean your faces should be realistic! That totally wouldn’t suit your style. I’m just saying the faces make your females a bit one-dimensional as characters. If you want that: great!
I should be picky about it, since my profession is writing. So maybe I do fuss too much about ‘characters’. If so, just ignore me:). Looking forward to more material!
maladie, no worries at all. it’s great to get some feedback, i shall keep in mind what you said. i totally agree that “character”, emotion, expression, gesture and all these things are important, both in a face and in the stance and pose of a character.
btw., what are you writing?

edit: my DSG before work
hey Jan, awesome thread
Guess i dont have much to crit/say (for now :P) other than i enjoy your work, keep em coming!!
