I was just testing download speeds at work and home earlier this week and comparing notes with my clients. The download at home (DSL) was about 25 minutes. I’m guessing the T1 at work to be about 7 minutes. My client at one of the film studios could download that in less than 30 seconds. So it’s a wide range.
Its Time For Me To Finally Reveal Myself!
Excellent work, I enjoyed watching it very much
Good luck in LA, though something tells me you won’t need it!
About downloading… An hour on 5 meg broadband at home, and 30 mins on 10 meg broadband at work. I too let the whole thing load before watching it.
All the best,
Ian
The contact information text appears right away. The movie play smoothly upon loading and took 13 minutes to load completely. 7 Mb Cable Internet.
I wont keep this thread going after this post, but I did re-compress
the movie taking it down 30% in size. The thing I need to know
most is not how long the ENTIRE movie takes to load. BUT how long
after you log in to the site can you hit play manually and have it play
un interrupted. On my laptop via wireless airport, I only have to wait
about a minute or so before hitting play. Zax Dow from Zaxwerks
gave me the advice to point out how much of the reel I was responsible
for, so I put a message on the opening screen addressing that, for now.
I appreciate everyone that took the time to view, or attempt to view my reel.
This community is truly a supportive one. Thank you.
and Like I said to begin with, I will no longer post on this topic so we can
get back to more DIRECT EI commentary.
Scott
Generally you would subtract the reel time from the full download time. So if it takes 25 minutes for a full download and it’s 5 minutes long you would have to hit the play button after waiting 20 minutes. Maybe offer a few smaller sizes like most movie trailers do.
Also you might want to list the MB size of the file someone is about to view before they try to play it.
I reduced my content over 30%. If anyone could take a second to give me their new experience viewing my reel, it really is helpful. In the next 10 days I HAVE TO settle on
my final compression, I will be hit by hundereds if not thousands by then and I want to be prepared. (I can reveal why in the next 10-14 days)
heres my reel http://web.mac.com/finaleffects I truly thank you guys for the help. this is the biggest step my career will have taken ever. And my friends here at the EI forum in cg talk are of GREAT help!
Thank you.

Amazing reel and fantastic PR for ElectricImage!
It took 12 minutes to download on our company’s fiber connection in Japan.
Best of luck with your exciting future!

Hi Scott,
it took now 22min. to download. Fantastic work! But i have one (small) crit… The Web Design of your page reminds me of early 90´page design made by hobbyiest, sorry to say said. Hope you feel not offended by this critique, but your reel deserves IMHO a more modern page design.
Regards
Stefan
Took 37 min on High Speed LAN setup at the office.
Download time_____Movie time
5 min_____________1:30
10 min____________1:55
15 min____________2:40
20 min____________3:50
25 min____________4:20
Stalled for 5 minutes at 4:22(movie time)
37 min download completed
As Allan mentioned, I was able to play the movie uninterrupted only after 32 min of download.
I agree with his suggestion of 1- indicating the file size and 2- offering smaller downloads.
I tried recompressing (H264) at 500X345 - 76 Mb and 320X221 - 32 Mb.
Even at 320X221 we still can appreciate the quality of your work and it would allow more people to view the reel.
No offense but I also find the web design out of date. Simpler would be better.
Playing with your reel for hours I am still amazed at the quality and dynamism of your work.
Hey Scott
I have a short break at the moment if want my input about the design. You did ask for my eye on that but at that time I was working 14+ hours a day with clients changing their minds every 20 minutes
. I see from your post you were up late so call me when you get up.
Allan
Hi, Scott
About 25 min. download here. on 6 Mbit ADSL, great work. I also find the web design out of date, to much busy. The simpler the better.
Hope that helps.

I made the whole thing in about half a day. Thank you for the input, I will make
adjustments to the lower half of the site. Ultimately I am going to have my biography
and shot list as well. Ill need to devote the time to be more critical with the design.
I dont want to appear dated, so Im on it.
Again thanks to all for walking me through this small, but important part of my
advertising. I appreciate everyones time.
(mystery, both my computers and my wireless laptop and my wifes work take 5 and
a half minutes to 6 and a half minutes to download with a standard roadrunner extreme cable modem by time warner here in LA.) But I obviously believe your reports. Its hard for me to fathom such a wild difference in times between DSL and Cable modems. But obviously there is one. My systems must not be typical. I will make adjustments, im just
not sure what just yet…
I’m glad to hear you’ll be improving the webpage design.
It was way out of sync with the amazing quality of your demo.
Having a choice of two video sizes sounds like a good choice.
For people like me with a fast connection, the current size is fine.
But if I had a slow connection, I would find the download speed frustrating.
Good luck getting it all worked out.

for the time being I have to many other tasks to complete in the next 10
days. I need to add a biography, a rather large shot list, and the contact
information will probably be on page 2. I may keep my email link on page 1
for the convenience of the viewer however.
What i am doing tonight is decreasing the file size another 20% and
adjusting the text.
Congratssssssss
Really wonderfull to see your work…
Hope to see asap in EITG website.
Thank you very much
Tomas Egger
well, it did happen. Brad put my entire real on the EI website. More compression than I care for but pretty flattering.
Id like to see more mograph work samples in the near future....
Dude Congrats!!! Smart move on EIAS part.
Your work qualifies EI on BroadCast motion graphics. Big Time.
Can someone point me in the right direction… I cannot find your reel at the EITG site.
(What title, what category)
