is this wings usual behaviour??

hi , i have just downloaded and installed wings on a pc which is rather old now but working as a charm… a pII machine. ok here is the problem. when i run wings, it opens fine and also the opengl is fine. i can rotate, zoom in and out and pan the view and i have no problem with that. the problem is that when i try to modify geometry like moving, rotate, scale, inset or bump i have got high cpu usage sometimes goign up to 92%. is this normal, i.e. is it the way wings work. this is very annoying because i have got several app running at the same time and using wings cause a massive slow down in all of them specially when i am using winamp(which i use all the time) it makes listening music nearly impossible. when i turn off all other apps such as winamp etc etc… i can use wings and it works like a charm. i dont really notice the high cpu usage. but frankly modelling is silence is not for me… i dont have this problem when using other 3d apps such as LW, Maya or Blender… i would like to give Wings a try because it as some really intersting modelling options and tools and also i would like to give Wings workflow a try… so my question is that when modifying geometry is it normal that wings cpu usage goes that high? also i am using win .xp as Os.

thanks

Well, to tell ya the truth, Wings3D does use up those resourses, and when using a smaller machine it really does become noticeable…

I started modeling with Wings on a celeron 266, and believe me it was not too too much fun, until I discovered that I was making my mesh way too dense, and that there was actualy a craft to “box modeling”… then I began to create with much more purpose and didn’t have as much trouble with Wings and the slowness thing… three or four thousand poly models to learn with were just fine… quick preview rendering such out to Carrara, or C4D CE was a snap, even with such a small machine…

and then I got a Celeron 400… and this boosted my poly count possibilities up just barely enough to generate some cool models like space corridors and stuff, a couple fun chars…

but in reality, I upgraded to a mid range 2200+ amd, etc, and it is really worth the few hundred bucks shelled out… the difference is totaly enough to be comfy with for the time being

In other words, the quicker the machine, the better the experience… not much more to say, this is just fact is all

happy modeling

lol… i didn’t know that Wings would require a dualXeon config. to be able to run smoothly with all other apps. well why i am so amazed of that is that once i had a LW render with many lights and radoisity going on for some hours but i could still use winamp and photoshop at the same time… well i tried also to set Wings priority to low but that either didnt help solve my prob. sorry Wings better luck next time…

it might be because it’s a free program. it’s either by a stereo or buy silo or modo. I’m not sure how they run on PIIs though.

I used to use Wings on a Pentium 2 (350 MHZ).
Ahh…Fond memories of lagging at 2000 polys, and the computer would freeze at 8000. :hmm:

Good days though, you learn alot on getting what you only need in.
You can also cut up the model into pieces and model. (Which is what i did.)

Best thing you could do to remedy it, is get a new computer. It goes up to 120’000 polys on this AMD 2500 (Clocks at 1.8 GHZ). Which is pretty weak compared to today’s computers. So, in my opinion. Wings handles resources just fine.

Well first of all, wings is written in erlang wich is an interpreted language.

You don’t have a compiled binary that runs the app.

The windows .exe just loads the interpreter and all the work is done by it, so it will always be slower and use more resources than a native binary.

What is crutial and makes a difference is to have a graphics card that is fully compatible with opengl.

For example wings runs much better on my laptop than on my desktop and my desktop has much more processing power and memory than my laptop, but my laptop garphics card runs opengl apps very well, and that makes the difference.

Best regards.

Good point raised re ogl…

even so, having some power in yonder box is also very good for the rest of the CG apps one is likely to venture accross… like ZBrush and the more ram the better factor… etc…

That’s oh so true

CG (and specially 3D) will always follow the ruke that “the much processing power the better”

Best regards

They make portable MP3 Players. RIO is one.

This well help you concentrate on modelling.

You seem like you needed a way to torpedo Wings3D and you found a good one. I just think that Wings3D is worth more effort than you are putting into it.

I bows right back at ya JP…

hehe

good call mj

oops, i should have know that not to criticise Wings in its own forum… lol… dont get me wrong Wings is a great little app and has some great option but for using it i should get a new config…buying a new pc is not for the time being. my current config allows me to do anything i want and with time (a PII machine…) i have get used and know how to split my meshes and work with them without experinencing any lags or problems and a reply to marky - i am already concentrate when i work on models and frankly speaking having some music in the backgroung is more of a help to me than complete silence… everyones workflow is not just the same…

p.s. if i wanted to torpedo Wings i would not have taken time to download it, download the manual, read the manual and besides why should i flame on something which is free and besides in its own forum…

and I beg that we all accept the negative and the positive and not yell troll to anyone.

ah… I have been right where this person is now… slow machine, lagging when modeling, esp in Wings… frustration… uggg… hehe… and… we learned to model more boxy…

but yea, the music…

well, I wish you luck…

I had this until i force antialiasing off in my nvidia settings then rebooted!
