Is the CGS area dead?

I’m jealous of any workstation these days that consists of more than a laptop with a touch screen. That’s what being a travelling student gets you these days… er, not that things were better in the ‘old days’ when it comes to technology.

I have this afternoon off! Yay! Guess what I’m doing with this juicy time off? That’s right, preparing for exams. :banghead:
What are you working on now, dimi? Any masterpieces to show us? Oh, another thing to ask…I’m thinking of a greek expedition this year, what’s the best time of year to go?

EDIT: Ordered the d’artiste digital painting book! It was so cheap…and no shipping… I had to get it!
Can’t wait…

Thanks for the comments on my photo’s Dimi/Rickmeister. I’m kinda proud of some shots my self.

Photography is really not that different from CG. I mean that in the sense that the tools can be very technical, but in the end you just need to use them to get the picture your want. An expensive tool will not get you a better picture automatically, you still need to work the tool to get the result you want.

What’s funny, is that I spent some time on Photography forums and you have people asking what camera is best, what lens is good etc etc. Reminds me a lot of what also happens on CG forums, where people have endless talks about weather they should get a Mac, use Maya or get a new motherboard. It has nothing to do with the art or media itself. But I guess that’s human behaviour.

And there’s more similarities. For instance the problem/use of Dynamic Range or Global Illumination. When you render a 3D scene, it can be quite difficult to light it properly so that light area’s aren’t blow out and dark areas still contain detail.
In Photography you have the same problem, especially since digital sensors still lack the same dynamic range that the human eye has. There’s a lot of people using multiple shots to create HDR images, it’s sort of the big hip thing in Photography.

Also since I make more photo’s, I’ve never been so much aware of the Depth Of Field properties of a lens/eye. I used to render everything in full focus. I’m positive I will never do that again. Most pictures come out so much better if they have a little or a lot Depth of Field, except maybe landscapes.

Basically I would advise anyone doing CG to also get out and take pictures. Just pick a subject and try to work with it. Don’t take shots that you plan to use in CG, it doesn’t have to be that way. Shots can serve a purpose by themselves too.

But I’m getting ahead of myself, this thread needs more mayhem

I have fallen in love with macro photography and HDR photos. Hard to pull off outside but totally worth the output.

I just love my new camera and its 4GB stick.

As promised the first of 2 sets of gross out pictures. This ones not too bad.

Funny story, I found this guy when I was mowing the grass. I was riding the lawnmower when I feel the tell-tale sign of running through a spiderweb (which I hate by the way). I look up and this guy was about a foot over my head scrambling all over the way spiders do when they are disturbed. He was about 5-6 inches long so all I see is “SPIDER, COMING FOR ME!” I squish down in the seat which puts pressure on the brake which stops me dead under this thing. So I finally let off the brake and slowly creep out from under him.

My first instinct after that is of course to go grab the camera. Man, my heart was pounding fast that day, even though I know banana spiders aren’t poisonous.

Enjoy.

Part 2, this is the nasty one. Old trees and branches are constantly falling in my yard and if they are far from the house I’ll usually leave them for a while, a year sometimes. Again, it was time to mow this particular area in question and there was a big fallen tree that had been there for a while. I saw it up into pieces and start rolling the pieces away for the garbage men when I discover about 8 of these guys in the ground underneath. You see, beetles love to eat rotting wood and they lay their eggs there as well. When the grubs (larvae) grow to about 1" long, 1/8" thick, they pupate and metamorphosis into adult beetles.

For whatever reason, some of them decide not to do this and instead they stay grubs and grow to enormous sizes. Most of these were around 4" long x 1" thick.

Jaws closed.

Jaws open. Their jaws are strong enough to tug a stick out of my hand when I prod them.

Here’s my hand for reference. I eyeballed this one about 5" long x 1-2" thick.

Good news is these will never become adult beetles, yikes I could only imagine how big that thing would be, and they are almost immobile they move so slow.

This was a while ago but I saw it and thought, someone on CGTalk will want to use this for reference, better get the camera, lol.

OH NO YOU DIDN’T.

:argh::cry:

Can’t you at least link to those horrifying pictures?

I’m going to have nightmares tonight…

A nicer pic to take our minds off that beast:

and something else I like to photograph: cemeteries! This is from the largest (and oldest) cemetery in Ireland, right around the corner from me:

#88

Very cool, though I’m not a tremendous fan of cemetaries. The older they are though, the more they seem to detach from death and become historical.

#89

Cemeteries and creepy crawlers it is then.

(not my hand, I took the shot)

Did you spot the ghost ?

Damn, Wyatt you have a proper critter-collection in your own yard. When I see a spider on my balcony it’s no bigger then 1 or 2cm.

Whyatt! those pictures a creepy! how the hell do sleep at night? knowing these monsters are lurking at your door…

Hey guys I have an idea that I have been playing with
Monday Night Meetup Club

The idea is simple.
It would be a single thread dedicated to posting
What are you working on…
The only requirement to participate is that you would have to present to the Gropu something new…And everyone on the group has to comment on it.

The idea is inspired on the famous Algonquin_Round_Table from the 1920’a that famous poet Dorothy was part of.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algonquin_Round_Table

From Wikipedia:

The Algonquin Round Table was a celebrated group of New York City writers, critics, actors and wits. Gathering initially as part of a practical joke, members of “The Vicious Circle,” as they dubbed themselves, gathered for lunch each day at the Algonquin Hotel from 1919 until roughly 1929. At these luncheons they engaged in wisecracks, wordplay and witticisms that, through the newspaper columns of Round Table members, were disseminated across the country.

Although some of their contemporaries, and later in life even some of its members, disparaged the group, its reputation has endured long after its dissolution.

The point of this group is to help those involved in Projects not covered by an NDA.
It would be perfect for those working on
[ul]
[li]Porfolios[/li][li]Independent animation projects[/li][li]Long term Painting projects[/li][li]Comic Strips[/li][li]Comic Books[/li][li]Indie Movies [/li][/ul]
Ans you know I will keep this going

As you know I have successfully launched multiple projects in the forum
Among them:
[ul]
[li]Daily Sketch Forum[/li][li]FXWars[/li][li]HCR Modeling[/li][/ul]And I helped in the formation of the
[ul]
[li]Bobby Chu Subway Sketch Cub.[/li][/ul]If I get more than 4 people interested Ill launch it Next Monday.

Good idea…i am in…but i can u usually post what i am working only after my NDAs finish .

I 've got about a dozen works like this and most of them i can;'t post for more than 10 months form now…

or…u mean personal works?

#93

I like the idea. Could we have it in the members-only area? That way it could be at least semi-private wich could make it easier to post ongoing assigned work (not under NDA)

It sounds like a good way to improve.

#94

Is any form of art permitted ? Or does it have to be CG ?
(I’m biased with Photography  )

But even so, I’m willing to try.

#95

Ssshh8, I’m always working on something…
ok, I’m a bit drunk right now…

not from booze but from lack of sleep :scream:
reason:

Anywayzzzzzz,
if I have nothing to show I will certainly comment

#96

i am definately in  awesome idea Roberto. i am working on a new personal project right now i would definateluy love to see your guys and galls comments on it .

#97

As long as you are not putting your job at risk, any kind of work is allowed…

And besides, I bet it would be a lot of fun to share with an receptive audience a commision piece you have been slaving on for a couple of months. (OF Course AFTER the NDA expires … Hell I just finished one right now that is a doozy… )

Any form… There is a merging of media going on, and I want us to be in the forefront of it.

It iwill be in the members only area…

#98

:bounce:

Yeah, I’m in. I’ll be insanely busy over the next two weeks though (exams), but after that I’ll be on this like a ton of bricks!

:applause:
