Is requesting help here even worth it?

I am a leader of a very small Doom 3 MOD (three people including myself) that is having a tough time getting anywhere fast, or even slow for that matter. Our project is practically shunned by everyone in the supposedly “close knit” Doom 3 modding community because we dare make something happy and cartoony looking with the dark atmospheric Doom 3 engine. We get little to no support from people that know their way around this engine and therefore have a hard time progressing.

I’ve finally come to the conclusion that everyone there would rather make a Doom 3 clone than actually try to modify it in an original manner. So I’ve decided to stretch my fingers a little farther for help. I’ve been a long time looker here at CGTalk, I don’t really have any knowledge to give, but I’ve seen the level of quality and support given here.

I’ve gotten the feeling from reading many posts though that video game 3D work is almost looked down upon and shunned here. The support here goes more towards cinema level quality projects from what I’ve seen and video game requests are almost completely ignored. So I offer a question that I’d like to have answered straight out and truthfully without any safe fence walker replies.

Is it even worth requesting help in the modelling/animating department on a freelance cartoony Doom 3 MOD? Are there really people here willing to create good quality material (not super dee dooper quality) for no pay? Is the game development section at this site cared about, or was it just added because enough computer gamers whined and complained about the gaming side of 3D not being recognized.

I’m tired of posting requests on sites and not even getting a single reply back. Is there any real chance help might be provided if requested?

Thanks,

Well i know i’d love to hear more infomation on the Mod!
I found DOOM3 dull and the graphics engine wasn’t put to great use in my opinion, but hearing you planning something other than 1stperson ‘realistic shooters’ is refreshing.

Unfortunatly my modelling skills are not good enough for me to help in that respect, but tell us more infomation on the mod, and any previous work you have done, so we can get idea of what you are looking for and how we can help

Looking forward to hear more, and dont give up!

It would also be something im interested in

Modelling skills are improving. Just doing character work in Maya at present. Also doing a few level mods in UT Editor at University.

So maybe something Im interested in.

Good Luck

That’s encouraging, thank you. I’ll be sure to get more information out. :stuck_out_tongue:

Just out of curiosity…what goes into making a mod such as what you’re doing?

Is it just redoing models/textures/levels? Or programming too?

I think you are advertising your mod the wrong way to the mod community. I think when people hear the word cartoony, they mistakenly equate it with simplistic and thus are not interested. I think most modelers, if they are like me, prefer to model things that have complex toplogy and/or are challenging to model. I think no one would prefer to model pokemon or something to that nature unless they are paid to do so.

Hmm… I see your point and it makes sense. I’m not really sure how else to explain it though.

It’s definately not pokemon, that’s for sure, but it’s also not Doom3 dark. It’s not realistic. It’s a goofy theme twisted and made dark, but still goofy. Here’s a wallpaper I made for my own personal use. It’s taken from one of the concept sketches of a slime wall monster thing. This is kinda the darkness of it all.

How would you describe it so it doesn’t sound campy and cheap? As you can see, it’s most definately not happy cartoony looking, yet it’s not blood and gore death.

Hi, what do you need? I can model some, and would be interested if my work is good enough, and if the schedule’s not too tight.

I see what you mean help is hard to get on here and know how annoying it is when no one replies.

Anyway, I would love to help, but with my a-levels and my own game to make, that is looking a little impossible, shamereally, I love character modelling
