Is it possible to add new joints to a model that has been weighed already?

Hi I’m having trouble posing a character and I made a skeleton for it and weighed it already but I need a few more joints in the hand but when I add new joints to it by dragging the new joints into the weight tag for my model the weights are all over the place in the hand now I tried zeroing them out but when I repaint the weights I get the same problem can anyone help me?
