I am going to buy a new graphic card for both gaming and 3D use. Has anyone has this card ? Does it have any issues with OpenGL ? Thanks
Is ATI 9600XT compatible with wings3D and Blender ?
ATI always has issues
But nowadays both Bjorn and I develop wings on a ATI 9800 so
that should work on windows and Mac atleast, I use Nvidia for linux, so I havn’t tested ATI’s drivers there.
ATI has a doubious reputation when it comes to OpenGL programs, specially if you are plannig to run it on non-windows OSs. As with many things, it can be hacked to run well, but why don’t you spare yourself from all the trouble and go with something more OpenGL friendly, like Nvidia’s GF4 series? - The early GF2 serie is nown for not been all that good.
I run a Nvidia Ti4200 (that is part of the GF4 serie) under Linux and it is just Sweet.
The main reason I choose ATI is because of its good game performance, especially the new Directx9 games
Word of mouth says, that radeon cards are better than FX cards regarding to price/performance. Soon I’ll have to buy a new videocard, because I’d like to play doom 3 when it comes out and It’s time to dig in normal mapping.
You have to differentiate: You want the card for doing CG work or to play games?
If you are going to do many CG then ATI is not a smart choice. If you are a hardcore player then ATI may be just right for you.
But since the title of this thread is about Wings3D and Blender, then I say NO ATI.
Just so you know, I’m running an ATI 9600XT and Wings works beautifully. There are no issues with OpenGL AT ALL. It’s a very kick-ass video card. My other computer has a GeForce card in it, and it ran Wings just fine too. The ATI does have an edge in performance though. Don’t be haters.

while geforce is always dependable, ati is a wierd flavor because when it works well it kicks ass and when it doesn’t work well it sucks ass, though I still want to upgrade my 8500 all in wonder, to either a geforce or depending on the price latest ati 9600
Sapphire ATi Radeon 9600 256MB DDR or 9600 PRO 128MB DDR? How much memory size counts in performance? What features has PRO over the regular 9600? I could buy them cheap, PRO costs a bit more.
I’ve bought an Abit GeForce FX5600 Ultra 256Mb DDR videocard. (Radeon 9600 was out of stock) Not just it performs badly (1855 on 3dmark03), but it has problems with wings3d.
I’ve installed DirectX 9b and 52.16 whql Detonator driver.
It renders the mesh awfully, like on the image attached. Has anybody encountered the same problem? Maybe the issue has some relation to virtual mirror. I’d like to report the problem to bjorn, but maybe it’s a known issue, secondly I don’t know how to report this. (What info, files needed)
Please Help!

I had such an issue with virtual mirror and it was related to the camera clipping plane being too small. Feck about with the camera settings and see if it has any affect.
Oh and by the way, I have a 9500 and it has opengl issues. It is good for gaming as you said. But for CG=Nvidia. XSI and Maya have had BIG issues with ATI.

the problem is nvidia has been having serious driver issues and all the people here have been misleading you. Ati video cards work fine with wings especially on the windows platform.
I had my ATI’s OpenGL settings at 4x antialiasing and 8x anisotropic, and every time I would move my mouse over something in Wings, the toolbar, menu bar and text line at the bottom would turn totally black, with strange little blue or orange specks appearing where text used to be. The whole thing would go back to normal once I clicked on the background, but the phenomenon was very irritating.
However, setting my AA and Aniso back to “Application Controlled” brought Wings back to normal.
Just remember, if you’re having issues with a piece of software after bumping your hardware settings up, try reverting back to less ambitious hardware settings to see if the issues resolve themselves.
wings tends to work fine with ati and nvidia
blender and ATI is an issue! a lot of trouble reportet
normally the problem is solved with disableing the 3d hardware acceleration.
sombody mentioned the nvidia and driver issue…
all i know of is a ATI and driver problem
:wip:
