THE IP INCUBATOR CLUB.

in·cu·bate

/ˈɪnkyəˌbeɪt, ˈɪŋ-/ Show Spelled [in-kyuh-beyt, ing-] Show IPA verb, in·cu·bat·ed, in·cu·bat·ing.verb (used with object)

  1. to sit upon (eggs) for the purpose of hatching.
  2. to hatch (eggs), as by sitting upon them or by artificial heat.
  3. to maintain at a favorable temperature and in other conditions promoting development, as cultures of bacteria or prematurely born infants.
    4. to develop or produce as if by hatching; give form to: His brain was incubating schemes for raising money.

Welcome to the IP Incubator Club
The idea behind this Club is simple

POST MONTHLY UPDATES of Original IP that you are developing. Hopefully IP that can eventually help the creator generate some income.
Also you should provide CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK to the work posted by other posters of the club.

The idea of this “Incubator Club” is to get away from the gloom and doom and provide a lifeline of support for our fellow artists.

The artists will have at their discretion how much they wish to share on the projects they are working on, what program they will be using and the medium . But the IP HAS BE AN ORIGINAL CREATION.

DEVELOPER CO-SPONSORS
The idea is to match developers with individual sponsors. People whose responsibility is to monitor the progress of a specific project. The sponsors would be fellow developers. It would be their responsibility to provide support and provide guidance to the developer from an outsider’s point of view. I’m not advocating “mentor ship” where there usually is an imbalance of expertise/knowledge between two parties. Rather, I envision sponsorship to be a vehicle for peer support, for consultation between and among artists who each have valuable tools, experience, and knowledge to share. Sponsorship is method for both parties to learn and grow professionally and perhaps personally as well.

The Concept___________________________
Ok so lets recap:
The idea behind this IP incubator club is to provide a cool hangout place for IP creators. recap…
Weekly threads will be posted, to provide encouragement for developer to keep working on their idea.

On way to see this is to think of us as a spotter on your local gym.
You use your WIP thread to post your regular updates, But ONCE A WEEK you post on the IP INC thread a summary, based on the forsmat posted blow.

CONCEPT NAME: Daisy’s Diner
WEBSITE: comic.jaredlindquist.com
CATEGORY: web comics

  PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
What do a dwarf, some giants, an alcoholic "nun", a chainsaw-wielding hillbilly, and a comic book fangirl all have in common? Not much, but they can all be found at Daisy's Diner.

WHAT WENT RIGHT:
Towards the end of April, I decided to try crowdfunding my work via Patreon. Over the past month, I’ve gained enough patrons to at least cover 1/4 of my monthly bills. It’s not much, but it’s a start.

WHAT WENT WRONG:
Creating content for my Patreon page meant a little less time for comics, but needing to draw a background in perspective meant less desire to even get started on the next chapter.

SHOW AND TELL
The newest chapter is finally underway, and is appropriately titled “Late Again”. This will serve as an official intro for Daisy’s much taller sister, Rose -

Concept Name: SCHIRKOA

Website: http://www.schirkoa.com/

CGTalk WIP thread: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=153&t=1103500&page=2

Project Description:
SCHIRKOA is the story (an IP maybe) I will be trying to develop in coming years.
At the moment I am aiming at an animated Short Film. Followed by a graphic novel. And then let’s see what else can come out. It’s set in a dystopian city, involves bagheads and some other ‘creatures’.

Status Number: 17

What went right/wrong past month:
*Switched to Redshift.
*Bought some assets to speed things up.
*Rendering for Act 1 in progress
*Animation for Act 2 in progress.

*As usual, day job slows things down.

Show & Tell:

beautiful images and look-mix… very impressive!

Schirkoa definitely looks great.

Daisy’s Diner is always interesting.

CONCEPT NAME: Le Gouffre

PRODUCTION BLOG: http://legouffre.com/en

CATEGORY: Animation

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Le Gouffre is an 8-minute animated short film about two travellers who embark on the amazing journey of crossing a gigantic gap. We are working full-time on this film, living on our own money, and we are basically trying to tell a great, dramatic story for everyone while creating a unique look that blends hand-painted textures with realistic animation.

PROJECT GOALS:

Win festivals, then make a big hit on the internet and gain the visibility and credibility that will allow us to eventually be able to live on telling our own stories.

STATUS NUMBER: 18

TEAM MEMBERS: 3

David Forest - Animation and Art Direction

START DATE: July 2011

COMPLETION DATE: February 2014

WIP THREAD: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=153&t=1085457

WHAT WENT RIGHT THIS PAST MONTH:

Lots of festival selections lately! Right now we’re up to six:

USA FILM FESTIVAL
LIGHTHOUSE INT’L FILM FESTIVAL
PALM SPRING INT’L SHORT FEST
ANIMA MUNDI ANIMATION FESTIVAL
FANTASIA INT’L FILM FESTIVAL
RHODE ISLAND INT’L FILM FESTIVAL

WHAT WENT WRONG:

We haven’t been selected for Annecy, that was a bummer.

SHOW AND TELL:

As always, you can follow our progress on our production blog.

These days, we’re mostly working on our Kickstarter Rewards, namely an Art Of PDF, Video Making Of and Poster. The Poster is the only one that’s completely finished, but we made good progress on the two others. Here you can see the result:

PROJECT TITLE: The Offering
WEBSITE: www.blurtheline.co.uk
CATEGORY: Short film (part of trailer for feature project)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The UK Prime Minister meets up with an investment banker at number 10. The banker through debate, weakens the Prime Minister’s resolve, putting him through the five stages of grief; denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance until he finally admits that he is not even worthy to be a politician. In such a weakened state, his soul is easily possessed.

Locations

The location for the narrative part of the scene is to be shot in Piccadilly, London. Shoot date 12th June. The location for the greenscreen portion of the scene to be shot with a treadmill, wind machine etc. Date TBA

WHAT WENT RIGHT:
We had a great crew for this one, and we needed it. Rehearsed beforehand so the actors knew their lines off-book, no problem. It was a bright sunny day and a lot of natural light from the windows helped (which we bounced about), so we didn’t use much artificial lighting. The shots looked beautiful.

WHAT WENT WRONG:
There’s never enough time when you’re indie with severe budgetary constraints. Literally had to sail through the shots, luckily the crew held together.
We didn’t have anyone on set who was a VFX supervisor or had knowledge of. So did we capture the right info on set to be able to do 3D tracking? We had some sequences that combined on set props with Cg to be added after. Did we deal with the props to make it easy to blend in the CG elements?

SHOW AND TELL

We shot in RAW 2.5K on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. The next shoot on the 26th June, I’m using another camera, Blackmagic Production Camera. It can shoot 4K which will be useful as this is the green screen portion of the scene, and extra resolution will help with the chroma keying.
