in·cu·bate

/ˈɪnkyəˌbeɪt, ˈɪŋ-/ Show Spelled [in-kyuh-beyt, ing-] Show IPA verb, in·cu·bat·ed, in·cu·bat·ing.verb (used with object)

  1. to sit upon (eggs) for the purpose of hatching.
  2. to hatch (eggs), as by sitting upon them or by artificial heat.
  3. to maintain at a favorable temperature and in other conditions promoting development, as cultures of bacteria or prematurely born infants.
    4. to develop or produce as if by hatching; give form to: His brain was incubating schemes for raising money.

Welcome to the IP Incubator Club
The idea behind this Club is simple

POST MONTHLY UPDATES of Original IP that you are developing. Hopefully IP that can eventually help the creator generate some income.
Also you should provide CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK to the work posted by other posters of the club.

The idea of this “Incubator Club” is to get away from the gloom and doom and provide a lifeline of support for our fellow artists.

The artists will have at their discretion how much they wish to share on the projects they are working on, what program they will be using and the medium . But the IP HAS BE AN ORIGINAL CREATION.

DEVELOPER CO-SPONSORS
The idea is to match developers with individual sponsors. People whose responsibility is to monitor the progress of a specific project. The sponsors would be fellow developers. It would be their responsibility to provide support and provide guidance to the developer from an outsider’s point of view. I’m not advocating “mentor ship” where there usually is an imbalance of expertise/knowledge between two parties. Rather, I envision sponsorship to be a vehicle for peer support, for consultation between and among artists who each have valuable tools, experience, and knowledge to share. Sponsorship is method for both parties to learn and grow professionally and perhaps personally as well.

The Concept___________________________
Ok so lets recap:
The idea behind this IP incubator club is to provide a cool hangout place for IP creators. recap…
Weekly threads will be posted, to provide encouragement for developer to keep working on their idea.

On way to see this is to think of us as a spotter on your local gym.
You use your WIP thread to post your regular updates, But ONCE A WEEK you post on the IP INC thread a summary, based on the forsmat posted blow.

Concept Name: SCHIRKOA

Website: http://www.schirkoa.com/

CGTalk WIP thread: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthr...f=153&t=1103500

Project Description:
SCHIRKOA is the story (an IP maybe) I will be trying to develop in coming years.
At the moment I am aiming at an animated Short Film. Followed by a graphic novel. And then let’s see what else can come out. It’s set in a dystopian city, involves bagheads and some other ‘creatures’.

Status Number: 12

What went right:
Finally started rendering! Well it’s far from what it sounds like because it’s more of setting up lights and shaders for environments. But still having some passes for some shots done feels better. Animation might take long so I’d comp characters later. Act 1 has too many unique environments. I am halfway through it and once act 1 environments are over I would be 60% done with lighting.

What went wrong:
I don’t think I can finish the film by mid 2014 as I planned. My teammates’ and my own job is slowing us down. We wont stop though. We are just going to use whatever time we have and keep moving. :wip:

Show & Tell:
I have updated the character page with 2 of the main protagnists. More to follow. (http://www.schirkoa.com/p/characters.html)

197A

Here is a small clip from the beginning. Some shots are okay, others far from finished. But I think the edit kind of conveys the overall feel.

#3

That sure looks good.

Definitely conjures up feelings of a Twilight Zone episode in animated form.

#4

Hey Thanks!
That’s good to know that it feels like Twilight Zone. As I am after a retro look and feel here. More soon

PROJECT: Oni World: Klank’s Story
STATUS NUMBER: 4 (probably)
TEAM MEMBERS:2
STARTED: Sept 2013
ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE : Sept 2014… or when ever Hell Freezes over.

WHAT WENT RIGHT THIS MONTH AND SHOW AND TELL COMBINED: Issues me and Sam were facing that I alluded to in the last update, have settled a bit but are not completely resolved. Needless to say, we’re plugging on with the game dev and are continuing to work on the game. Here’s some of the work Sam has been doing since the last update:

"I’ve mainly been working on some gimmicks and optimisations, such as the fluid physics and effects that I have already shown off. I’ve improved these a lot, and they now look, feel and perform much better. To show this off, I’ve committed a FluidScene example to GitHub so you can all pull it and try it out yourselves.

I’ve also added support for quadratic bezier curves on smart textures and started working on a vector polygon editor. You can now draw environments just like you would draw something in Adobe Illustrator using the pen tool. This is awesome, as it allows anyone to easily design a level or even some supporting background elements using smart textures. The idea behind them was to minimize the effort needed to plan, draw and then build a level by having a set of 3 textures that make up the floor, walls and the background. Using this method, we can save alot of memory and processing power." - Sam

“As you can see, it makes a massive difference with just one little change. The grass no longer splits into two and it looks seamless. It also allows us to do some pretty cool mind bending effects. - Sam”

I’ve also done some more asset creation for the game. This time, its for a part much later on in the game as I was getting a little tired of drawing metal things all the time.

WHAT WENT WRONG THIS MONTH: Both of us are still pretty busy and we’ve both not been able to devote as much time to the project as we’d have liked. We’ve also both had our days of being ill which has gotten in the way of things, but we’re on it now. New year with a new sense of urgency.

I like rounded look in the earthen elements (you had sharp corners, 45-degree angle corners, and the rounded ones).

The rounded ones I think are the best looking.

I like how it kind of looks like an alternate “Super Mario Bros. U” with some of the techie look from the Metal Slug games, but updated for modern gamers.

#7

Ok lets get the conversation rolling…

For all, what your Goals for 2014?
How can the community (and the IP club) help you ?
When do you pan to finish your project?

Tell us guys…

-R

#8

Yeah… I think now would be a good time to ask what the Deadlines are for some of these things.

“Think SMART!.. think S-MART!”

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Time-Bound

 Go! Go! GO! GO!

#9

Thanks man. You’re right, the rounded corners look best with the earthen elements and, when it comes to developing soft surface areas of the game, this is the corner type we’d be using. But, for the areas in hard surface environments, the sharp corners is what we’ll be going for I think. Well, we’ll mix it up no doubt.

Mario meets Metal Slug… that should be on our posters.

My main goal this year, for me, is to keep working on it the Oni World game, even when I don’t feel like it, don’t want to, or if I’m too tired or what ever. I think to do this, I’ll look to this thread for continual inspiration (in seeing others working on their projects) and making sure I have something to show for each of the monthly updates.

Another goal for this game is to actually make it one of the most layered and personal creations I’ve ever worked on. To do that, I’m going to fill it with so many references, easter eggs and little articles that link to my life from the movies that really impacted me growing up, the games that made me want to make games for a living, jokes that I share with my friends and even references to the music I constantly listen to. They’re all going to be subtle and not get in the way of actually playing and completing the game, but they’re going to be like an extra layer that I hope people will pick up on.

Another goal for me is also to continually push my design and drawing skills. I’ve been considering taking some online courses to learn some new software, maybe learn to code a little, and I hope that by working on the game, I can force myself to have to do new things. I think I’m the most happiest when I know I’m striving towards something, so completion of the game coupled with pushing myself, are the ultimate goals for this year.

#11

The goal for me is to get the Comic Company officially started. Wrath #2 is on the way and I’ve scripted out to Issue #5.

I have a second title that I’ll start promoting in the late Spring, and its awesome. Even more awesome than Wrath.

The ip club can help by providing feedback and eventually i may want some custom art and other contributions.

#12

Great update, what Sam worked on seems to add a lot of flexibility. I’m guessing this is not purely visual, and that the collisions are also automatically following the curves?

Either way, nice work!

First, finish the film and move on to freelance illustration as my first source of income (instead of taking on a new job in a studio), so that I can focus more on marketing my finished short film and develop new ideas.

Second, fill in as much as possible the theatre we rented for our film premiere, which can accomodate up to 700 people. For this we will need to mobilise people from every animation studio in Montreal, but we believe we can build enough hype around the film to do so.

And third, send the film to as many festivals as possible so that we build up a larger fan base for the big launch on the internet sometime at the end of the year. We are also hoping for a first prize in some big festival so that we qualify for the Academy Awards next year.

I wouldn’t say no to an article about our film once it’s online around fall 2014!

In two weeks we should have everything done except for the audio and video mastering, which should be completed this February in time for our premiere in March.

Hi, here’s an update from NeverEndingPrincessStory…

//youtu.be/Mz_Wdppsu-I

This footage the new “aesthetic”. Frame speed is low; draft quality.
Some shots seem to want to still be done in camera but there is an example of the green screen technique also; hoping this will speed things up.

Now getting serious with Unity, very intriguing… here’s a screenshot of some terrain and game object. I seem to have to collision detection worked out and this landscape only took a few moments to produce. Going to add some more layers (audio and gameplay) soon.

For all, what your Goals for 2014?

Hope to have a playable game in the app stores by April. Nothing exciting; just collecting mushrooms/gold for points to start.

How can the community (and the IP club) help you ?

I could use some help on using AE; best presets to use for certain effects for example. If you have experience deploying a multiplayer game in Unity on Photon or Azure I would be interested in some guidence. If you are a brand looking for exposure of course I would like to be sponsored by you

When do you pan to finish your project?

It’s NeverEndinging… ha ha
But I hope to produce about 30 minutes of animation and a playable game by June.
After June it just gets too nice up here in Mont Tremblant to sit inside on the computer; that’s when the “season” is over. Then it’s learning over the summer; updating techniques until winter; and then back at it. Over time this method does produce results. If I had some helpers or budget of course it would move faster, but hey; I am not a big studio; just a little guy so slow is OK for me. ONE day I hope it hits; but the truth is you still have to do the work to get there. So… enough promotion; time to click on File/New and keep splitting pixels.

#14

Starting to look alot better in the Neverending Princess.
Is there any way since you are using bipedal characters to bring Mocap into your production?

#15

Starting to look alot better in the Neverending Princess.

Thank you

Is there any way since you are using bipedal characters to bring Mocap into your production?

Most "walking/Climbing/movement in the movie/video would be mocap; typically a Daz product. As for the game; Unity seems to have their own system (or 2) going on. I thought I would use existing assets and transfer some of the movements into game but this seems like a hassle. Unity system comes with tons of premade scripts; walk, run, idle, etc so I will use these to start anyway.

Happy New Year everyone! Here’s our latest:

STATUS NUMBER: 6!
TEAM MEMBERS: 20 (Voluntary)
ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE : January 30, 2014!
http://www.youtube.com/theoryvisiontv
WIP THREAD: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=7739110#post7739110
WHAT WENT RIGHT THIS MONTH:

We didn’t talk much to the world in the past few weeks as we’ve been focusing on getting the latest episode done. We kicked ass too The whole team knocked out the animation and most of the rendering in just a few weeks. We’re now on sound & music

WHAT WENT WRONG:

Not enough outreach and talking to our audience. Working on the show is one thing, but the marketing to let people know something is coming is also just as important. Missing the last few IP updates is a good example. Just been too busy working

SHOW AND TELL:

Not done yet but…

#17

For all, what your Goals for 2014?

Well, finish my short film. And prepare for the next one

How can the community (and the IP club) help you ?

Just what it’s doing is great already. Seeing other artists working hard at personal projects is brilliant. I hope more people join and share.

When do you pan to finish your project?

Anytime in 2014 would be great. We get slowed down once in a while due to work, life etc. But we 'll finish within this year.

#18

For all, what your Goals for 2014?

To create a solid playable prototype of the first level of my game, including all necessary assets and logic. From there, launch a Kickstarter campaign to secure the funding needed to hire other artists to help with key assets.

How can the community (and the IP club) help you?

Once I pick up my social media presence again, just helping to share it with people who might be interested in the project’s development. Could be fans of beat 'em up games, IP development, indie games, etc… helping to build a following organically will be key for my 2014 plans.

And of course, continue to receive & give very valuable feedback!

When do you plan to finish your project?

I’m going to be very conservative with my timeline and hope to have the prototype done this calendar year. When contemplating my new year’s goals I realized that I wanted to work on this project, but not at the expense of living a fulfilling life, so I’m taking a more relaxed schedule. I’m shooting for prototype & Kickstarter sometime this summer, but no pressure at all.

#19

Hi, just a quickie update to show some progress and to illustrate my vision of how you COULD work a sponsor into a production in a meaningful and valid manner.

//youtu.be/QhzhuR8LKpw

This is the Elven Queen Storyline. Using AE and Premier Pro, starting to get the hang of it; the workflow. Now I have true voice actors which is much more compelling.

Some small special effects have been added and some background noises.

This clip is “in production” and hopefully will be released on the website next week.

#20

Ok guys, I have been working a lot behind the scenes and I wanted to give you all an update.

I am in the early stages of organizing an IP presentation. I have contacts in the US Goverment IP agencies and they will be sending speakers.

So I do plan to film that meeting and share it here. Before the meeting I will be collecting questions from here. And I also have some crazy plans in mind too.

… More soon.
