Interview with Luxology's Brad Peebler

#3

Oh my god he has a Thundercats t-shirt!

Modo sounds great… cool article! From the screenshots, modo reminds me of a mix between LightWave and Maya. The UV layout, in particular, reminds me of Maya.

UV stuff sounds cool, they really need to get a demo version going. My studio isn’t just willing to drop some cash just so the artist can have a new tool to try out that they have to learn their way around. So if you guys are reading this post you need a demo. I know your managements saying not yet. But before I can go to my lead and tell him how cool the Uv lay out is in modo I need to test it. Best of luck to them.

Great interview Sheep!

Now if only Brad would throw in free Thundercat’ws t-shirts with every purchase of Modo

#6

I’d settle for a modo shirt, it’s a really sweet logo.

Thanks sheep for that. I have had modo for 5 days now. Everything brad said still doesn’t do modo justice. You really have to try it to see just how great of a modeling tool it is. It does so many things I never even thought of, it’s truly well deserved of all the hype it’s gotten in my opinion.

Gnarf!

The Thundercats are great! - although Mumm-Ra really cracks me up nowadays. Funny guy

To stay on topic. Thanks for a cool interview, I have to try Modo very soon.

Is it just me or is Brad Peebler starting to look a lot like a smaller Mr Incredible :wip:

Looking forward to seeing Modo and other Luxology products. I like the spirit they are showing.

Hey all,

not trying to be an ass, but I don’t see what the big appeal with Modo is, could someone fill me in as to what’s exciting to them about this? Again, I’m not trying to be critical, I’m really curious. Thanks.

#15

your not being an ass, your being lazy.

www.luxology.com

there is also a cgtalk forum for modo on here, look through some of the posts and find out what people are saying.

Modo is the most extensible and customizable modeling tool ever created. This will make it a hit with major film studios. It’s unique in that it rides upon a 3D “operating system” which will make cross platform plugin development easier.

Luxology’s software works on both Mac OS X and Windows, but it will be the first 3D system to really take full advantage of the OS X platform (some other 3D companies treat the Mac as an after thought).

Demos of Lux’s upcoming renderer are very exciting. It’s very fast. It’s fully extensible.

Hmmm… why does Luxology’s Brad Peebler always remind me of Buzz Lightyear? :stuck_out_tongue:

To infinity and beyond?

#17

yeah, you’re right, I’m lazy, I’ll just check into it when I get home from work. Just thought maybe I’d get someone to do all the work for me

anyway, thanks for the response.

cool interview, I just wish there was a demo of some sort, as its alot of dough to shell out before acualy trying it. Ill have to wait for the reviews

At this point MODO looks nice, but a bit limited being only a modeler and UV layout editing program. Sure MODO seems to have some new and nice tools not found in other packages but those are bound to be copied in some form and either integrated or released as plugins for other packages. For the freelancer I dont think modo will has much success, most people needs to do more than modeling and these days most packages has quite good tools built in for modeling. However, I do believe that larger companies would benefit from something like modo, at most smaller places you never have people who do modeling only, but at bigger companies maybe you would have some people working on just this part of the pipeline, and for that modo seems great. I’m in no way bashing the software, its a modern and flexible solution. According to luxology the codebase is portable to nearly any OS and can easily be extended to offer other functionalities such as integrated rendering and animation tools. If things goes well I have no doubts that in time MODO will evolve to something much bigger than just a modeling package.

Just my two cents

Ah, great he makes it a bit more clear what Nexus is, many people mistake it for the renderer. It’s just like i expressed in this post

I’m saving up…

Brad Peebler has said that sales of Modo have been well above expectations. It’s good to hear that Modo is a success, though I suspect the initial surge in sales might partly be a result of the introductory discount price.

We know that Luxology is working on a renderer to go with Modo, as they’ve demonstrated it at various trade shows.

I think Modo offers the best of 2 worlds… being a separate modeling program, but can also be integrated inside Luxology’s renderer. Both modules would ride on top of the 3D operating system, which makes it different to other 3D packages.
