Intel i7 7700k or AMD equivalent (ryzen 5 or 7) for Game Development ue4 maya zbrush

Im a bit stuck on which processor to get. I thought i7 7700k would be best so concentrated my research on that but recently heard ryzen was good at rendering.
I dont really know what the equivalent AMD CPU is but im looking at ryzen 5 and 7.
I found an old article saying more cores is better for rendering but GPU is better for animation and modelling. And that rendering is going more towards GPU .
Has that happened. Is the GPU more important in rendering.
Right now im at the modelling phase and will be animating soon. I dont know how much rendering i will need to do.
I will be using a nvidia 1080 GPU which if rendering is mostly GPU based now, should be good enough as it is quite a recent release
I will also be using Unreal Engine 4 amd zbrush. Most modelling, animation and rendering will be done in maya 2016.
If there is any other powerful software that you think I will need to use or will end up using, please let me know and do take that into account.
Im working on my own game, just me right now.

As for the gaming side, im not really concerned with using it for games. I probably will, but the priority is game development.

That I7 is faster per-core, but the R7-1700 has twice the cores and is cheaper. 4 cores/8 threads for the 7700K vs 8 cores/16 threads for the 1700.

For rendering, the R7-1700 will demolish that i7, especially if you clock it up (which the 1700 does beautifully). Don’t worry about the 1700X or 1800 Ryzens, the best bang for the buck is that 1700. A base comparison (cores*clockspeed) yields 33.6 combined clocks for the Intel and 48 for the R7. If you clock it up to an easy 3.8Ghz, that basic metric goes to 60.8, almost double the Intel’s. But that number is only a “rule of thumb”, and not a perfect metric for rendering.

However, that i7’s base core speed might be a better deal for you since a lot of modeling and game stuff, and not as much full-on rendering. You may feel a bigger benefit there. It will cost you a little more and you’ll suffer at rendertimes, but only relative to other new chips. It’s still pretty fast.
