Instances

#1

Hello,

Wings newbie here, enamoured with the speedy performance of Wings on my aging Mac.

My question is, how does one create instances? Can I select an object (say, a cube) and create a set number of duplicates, each one referencing the original?

I’m working on a project where there are several sequences of identical bolts spread of evenly along a line. At the very least, I need a quick duplication function.

Many thanks!

i believe the only method would be :face select-duplicate-select axis. not sure if you can choose number of instances, but you could always assign duplicate to a hotkey:)

Thanks for the tip.

The impression I’m getting is that while Wings is dynamite for single object modeling (ie: a head,a car, etc.), more complex, mechanical scenes aren’t it’s strength (given the lack of arrays or instances features).

Sound about right?

<< assign duplicate to a hotkey >>

If of interest, this is what I’ve done - assigned just Object | Dupe -> Free to a hotkey (not bothered with xyz - I’ve used Cntrl+V …paste)

Workflow is then:
Select object
Dupe on the same spot (press dupe hkey, hold shift to constrain)
(Press Shift+D if want more dupes at same place)
Move x,y,z one object (these also on hkeys)
Keep first object selected and select another from dupe ‘stack’
Press shift+D
Repeat until all objects at correct place.

I use the same method for circular arrays as well (see link below)

ah but lets not over look the puton multiple command
if you have a surface that needs alot of bolts on it you can use this to put bolts on many faces at once
you can also use this to quickly build arrays and magnets can come in handly on this as well

No, good point - but destination geometry needs to pre-exist and under certain circumstances PutOn can do somewhat weird things re the orientation of the cloned objects.

If items already exist, the Tool | Align and Bounding Box are also worth a serious look - imo.

Great tips, folks.

I’ll be sure to look up your suggestions in the manual and give 'em a try.
