Import models, scaling issue

#1

Hi,
Just trying to get going with messiah and start by importing Poser models and Modo models (only one at a time). When they appear in messiah they are huge. I mean truly huge, so big that no matter how far I zoom out they are still too big to fit on screen until eventually they start to become deformed.

The Poser models are obj’s and the Modo models are lwo’s.

What am I doing wrong?

Adjust the scale while exporting. Or scale the models after import.

You could also change the grid size which will allow you to zoom out with much less distortion

The keyboard shortcut is “[” or that “]” to scale it up or down.

#4

If you choose this path, I find it the safest to export the scaled objects and import them again to avoid troubles (with bones for example)

Hi Beady, there are 2 different commands to control the grid size:
-The grid size
-The grid units

The first, only draw more divisions to the grid, but the second really resize the 3d world into the messiah, it´s the command that you need.

To find them, go to the Customize tab / keyCommand Manager / commands, into the interface group. The better solution is to know the shortcut for this 2 commands (create new one if needed), and try to play with it´s parameters to obtain the better results

Many thanks for that, using the ‘]’ and ‘[’ keys seems to work.

One last question (for now). Is it possible to re-set the rotation tool. I need to re-position the parts of the imported model and rotate them, but the X and Z handles adopt the orientation of the rotated part rather than globally, so moving the part accurately then becomes difficult.

Hi beady, one solution can be to create a null named master_“piece”, parenting your piece of geometry to it, readjust the rotation of the piece, and to use the null to control the rotations.

Really I’d recommend just scaling your model on export. Perhaps we can help. This thread on polyloop MIGHT help: http://forums.polyloop.net/showthread.php?t=6024&highlight=scale
I used it to help me figure out how to adjust my settings to get the right scale into Messiah. Once you figure it out once its just a matter of using the same settings each time and you’ll avoid issues with having to adjust the world size each time.
