[Image] Lord of Darkness

Yeah, I’ll have a bunch of stuff to show soon. I am gathering the materials and figuring out what to write up. I’ll post the “making of” in this forum, It will cover some Modo stuff, Blender LCSM Unwrapping, how to setup Multi-UVs for ZB, how to sculpt with Multi-displacement and how to setup Multi-UVs and Multi-displacement in messiah, and also bunch of stuff I learned with materials and rendering in messiah. Nothing magical, just a look at the workflow that went into making this image.

Cheers,

I have this toy. I would say that the only crit is that it does look very plastic and more like a maquette. Not very “real” and when I say real, I use that loosely. The model is phenomenal. The textures and everything look great, it’s just that it looks close to the toy I have, if you follow. Other than that, awesome work man. You are a very talented individual.

reminds me a lot of diablo…from the game…

…anyway awesome work!

hey tony,

great job but i just have a few points of critic:

  • the finger tips and palms of the hand look kind of smooth when compared to the detail of the face and body.
  • the composition could be a little tighter by cropping off the top 25%. it’s dead space. at the moment.
  • the levels could be tweaked and hightlights given a red hue (which dominated Darkness’ lair)

*** If that yellow light source is suppose to be the sun then Darkness would be reeling in pain rather than gloating as you have him now. ***

Nice to see the final piece, Tony after the roadblocks you’ve had. Great Work!

F***'n h"ll!!! You know, I’ve always loved Legends since I was a kid. I think it was the whole “fairy” aspect and the misty feel of movie. Your image is just awesome and captures the uniqueness of the Prince of Darkness. You know, in case you didn’t, he was played by Tim Curry, the same guy that played Dr. Frankenfurter in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Apparently the makeup took some 9.5 hours to do.Also, the movie was based on a board game that came out in the early 80’s and was directed by Ridley Scott. I think he is probably the most visually imposing villain of any movie. I think it ranks up in the top 10 of all time.

Very nice work and definitely worth the front page!

There is a bunch of things that might not look right, but I followed the movie design as much as possible, the smooth look and lack of detail in the hand is one, there wasn’t much wrinkling in that area, I originally gave his hand this really distorted fierce look in ZB like something you would expect from a guy from hell, but that just wasn’t true in the movie, so I went with what seemed close to the film version. The plastic look is also one I debated with, because in the film it doesn’t come off as skin, but a latex makeup with dirty greasing marks, The cape also looks like plastic wrap in the film with some dust/dirt and sparkles, but I couldn’t sell the sparkles so I left it out.

The color space wasn’t actually red in the film, it was actually a mulky yellow, with a slight greenish color. The redish-yellow light source isn’t from the sun it is actually from his frecking huge fireplace in the film, which is the only real light source in his chamber, but there are some bright ambient lights spots.

And Thanks for all the comp you guys, I wasn’t expecting this to hit the frontpage.

Cheers,

Nice to see the final piece, Tony after the roadblocks you’ve had. Great Work! I’d love to see a larger render of the face area … to see the 4000+pixel image maps in all it’s glory.

A link to some of the work in progress …

BTW do you have a wireframe?

#31

I think it would make the man who design`d Darkness very impressed.

ROB BOTTIN

Well done

#32

Here is an old wireframe, it went through some changes, and I’ll post the updated one and other things in the “making of” post.

That is just amazing! Very nice model and all. The render and lightning is very nice also.
I think as others have already said; that it does look a bit plastic, or maybe he’s a bit sweaty
Very nice picture. Definately front page material.

#38

Hmm reminds me the bad guy from the movie The Last Unicorn. Anyway great work!!!

#39

Nice model, but I think the texturing and render in general don’t meet the same level of quality. Good job nonethless!

This character is from the 1985’s film “Legend” by Ridley Scott. Pretty neat film. This bad guy was played by Tim Curry, and was centaur-like (half man, half horse) and really cool, stop-motion animated if I remember correctly when he was shown his whole body. Very nice detail to the model there, but I agree on what others have said about the skin looking too plastic-like. Maybe if you did some more work making some variations in the skin like spots to break up the surface detail a bit, give a sense of scale and all. Other than that, amazin work!

PS: While I was checking out the year, found out that apparently this movie inspired “Legend of Zelda”
