Im back with a question

#1

After moving from our apartment and still living in a few boxes, I have my computer out and trying some new things. I have a problem.

I’ve combined a model with a brushedsteel MAT file and told the model to render the lines. Some models had a few glowing ends. When I go to render, it takes 20 minutes on a 120 patch model. For two models it worked just fine, had the brushedsteel, three points glowing and the lines rendered. I can’t find a pattern that would cause AM to freak like that. Any ideas?

#2

Is there a layer in the chor? I’ve had renders suddenly balloon in rendertime because I had a layer in them, for some reason. Also setting stepped renders (i.e. render 1 in every 3 frames, for instance) also caused it once, IIRC.

Try removing elements from the chor and testing the render to see how long it takes until you isolate the cause of the render lag

#3

Actually this all happens in a model window, not the chor window. I hit Q or even try to save the render as an image and nothing. Or 30 minutes passes and I get a large lit blur.

Don’t know if there are going to be too many people (Hash included) who can help you out with a version 8/9 problem. Theres been a lot of water under the bridge since then (ie major enhancements to AM)!

Cheers

Whops, didn’t notice it was the 200 version. Well, it sounds like the material is causing some sort of undesirable interaction. If you have several versions of the software you might try installing them to see if the problem dissapears in other versions - often what is broken in version e isn’t in version c or viceversa.

Can I upgrade my 9.0 to 11.0 or 12.0? I gather since 11.0 just came out of beta, I’de be best to get that now and wait for, say, 15.0.

No offense, but since I still have 9.0, should I even bother to come here if all I’m going to get is “Get the upgrade?” I used to see help for those who had 8.0 and lower versions but perhaps everyone is upgrading?

I know it is frustrating for you, but A:M v9.0&9.5 were very very buggy and if you’ve got problems with it, you wont get much help anymore, cause even Hash hesitated on that version… v10 and 11 are so much more stable, has better features and is just much more fun than v9.0.

You had really no luck here… v8.5 was quite stable, v10.0, v10.5 and v11 are too, but v 9.0 and 9.5 werent…

I would really think about an upgrade to v11.1 and if you buy it now, you can upgrade to v12 soon… (Hash said, the new v12-CD comes out in july, so you could wait for it).

I feel very sorry for you, but I think the 99 Dollars you are paying for the upgrade are 99 Dollars which will really be worth… I know it is frustrating, and many users gave up on A:M in the 9.0 and 9.5-days, but the once which staid or the onces which are coming back are really happy with the new versions of A:M…
And think of the nice new features like new hair, new cloth and some other really great things… the interface has changed, but it is even better now…

Sorry that I cant help you in another way…

Well you helped me make the choice. I didn’t want to get v.10 because it would just be a fix of the 9x series. I didn’t feel there were enough improvements in v. 11 to justify $99 but from what everyone is saying about it, Ill get v. 12 for sure. I’ve been patient enough to wait this long and since I’m saving up $20 a month, I can most definitely wait till July! By then there may be a patch or two and I can get things on a roll. Fuchur, thank you for being understanding and helpful in this regard. I really didn’t wish to put all the work I placed into A:M down the drain because of the lack of updates. I’ll post some work here soon.

P.S. How can I post work here without someone taking it. Or is that just one of the risks?

You’ve got to remember - YOU ARE NOT buying versions of AM. You are buying a subscription to all releases made by Hash in the calender year you pay for your upgrade. So if you upgrade now you will get v11.1 and be eligible to download the current v12 betas and if v12 is released this year (I think it will be officially released next month) then you get that to. BUT come 1 Jan 2006, if you do not upgrade again, you will not be eligible for any further releases (even though those releases may be bug fixes for your current version - though Hash does provide a little ‘give’ here and there)

Note that v11 has been out of beta for quite a long time!

Just one of the risks - you can embed your copyright into the files but they are easy enough to remove by unscrupulous members. If it is that important to you then I suggest you try to make a bond with a few trustworthy souls and release work to them to take a look at.

It looks as if the newest version of A:M will not work with Windows 98se as well correct?

Windows 98? Are you still playing with your Atari 2600?

I have a Netrender version of 11.1 installed on my old Duron 800 under Win98se but I only used the render slave - I haven’t actually tried running AM itself on it.

#14

Hm, cant help you there, but I didnt hear any official statements from hash about not supporting win98SE…
Only thing they dont yet support (even if they are working on it) is the new Mac OS Tiger…

Hmm, If I recall correctly, I was running 10.5 on win98se - I’d check it out but my PC’s dual boot stopped working, it looks like win2000 ate it’s younger sister after I patched it.

The upgrade should be worth it, I recently re-installed v8.0 to compare some render settings (There are some toon render effects I haven’t been able to duplicate, volumetric lights in 8.0 gave a nice “bloom” effect in 8.0 with the toon render, but in 11 all they seem to do is kill the toon lines) and the software is definitely noticeably feature rich in comparison to the older version (Though I guess 8.0 is quite uncluttered and straightforward, some might prefer it that way)

I reccomend you backup all your v8 files and keep them in storage, as I found when jumping from 8 to 10 that 90% of my choreographies were unusable, unfortunately by then I’d updated all my models so I couldn’t really use them in 8 anymore either  (A bad batch of backup CDs didn’t help either)

Just wanted to thank Bugle, Fuchur, and, higginsdj for actually trying to help me out here and not banter me out a new one like some people seem to enjoy doing. I still have version 9 and I hope that the Models stay intact when upgrading to 11 or 12. Since I’m saving up a bit I can keep waiting a few more months till I purchase the upgrade. I purposely made only a few choreography files since my original plan as to create a whole lot of models and wait around for a version upgrade or two and then get into movie making and this settles it. We’ll see if the new versions work as well with my Win 98se and if not, Longhorn is around the corner too. I’m quite patient.

V9 Raw Mesh files should work in the latest version. Rigged models may not load (crash AM on load) or may not work as expected as some significant changes to the way constraints and smartskin work have been made over the years.

Cheers
