Illustrator CS3 Problem

#1

“Please choose a key object by clicking on the selected object(s) with the selection tool, or set the spacing value to Auto.”

This comes up every time i try to use Distribute spacing with a predefined distance. I have several grouped objects and want to put a 10mm gap between all the objects in the vertical direction.

I have tried selecting two objects, one object, all objects, no objects - same thing everytime.

It’s a bit stupid that it says to select something when I have about 100 of them.

Help would be appreciated otherwise I would have to resort to figuring out the increments required with the move function and then auto distribute. I would rather fix the problem

Thanks

When you distribute objects you first have to select ALL the objects to be distributed and THEN select ONE key object to be your “anchor”, i.e. this selected object will not move while all the other objects are distributed around or from this one.

Edit: When I say select a key object all you do is click it once, no marqueeing or anything like that.

Ah, get it now. Perhaps to aid in this area, they should make a visual cue that the key object is active lol…
