Nice suggestion Roberto!
Normally I’m not really into having to use existing plates, as it limits your creativity and originality allot. On things like ‘bullet hits’ it’s in my eyes nicer to create your own atmosphere and setting around it. But something like a ‘set extension’ could be very interesting, as the vfx-artist then still has allot of freedom. As long as you just keep the subject ‘extension’, without to many extra rules. Something like ‘extend this plate of a little town/little set, into a big town in 1930’ (as they did at Weta for King Kong
) ) would be interesting to me!
Also it depends on the footage: if it’s footage of a world-famous place it might be more interesting to use then something ‘just around the corner’, as it is then more interesting to shoot it myself.
If it’s really high-quality footage, ‘digital makeup’ might also be very cool!
I think the key would be to just keep the form/look open to the entrants, so not limiting it more then ‘you have to use this footage for digital makeup’.
That’s my 2 cents
