Ideas for the future: Challenges with Live action Plates

#1

Guys for a while I have been thinking of doing some
of our future challeges with live action plates…

Some topics I have in mind are:

* Day for Night
* Bullet Hits
* Snow on Ground
* Cold Breath
* Slow-Mo Bullet
* Digital Matte
* Craft Landing
* Set Extension
* Virtual Set
* Digital makeup
* Digital Crowds

  • Hologram
  • The Moving Car

So if you have any other topics (and or ideas), please feel free to share them.

Nice suggestion Roberto!

Normally I’m not really into having to use existing plates, as it limits your creativity and originality allot. On things like ‘bullet hits’ it’s in my eyes nicer to create your own atmosphere and setting around it. But something like a ‘set extension’ could be very interesting, as the vfx-artist then still has allot of freedom. As long as you just keep the subject ‘extension’, without to many extra rules. Something like ‘extend this plate of a little town/little set, into a big town in 1930’ (as they did at Weta for King Kong :wink: ) ) would be interesting to me!

Also it depends on the footage: if it’s footage of a world-famous place it might be more interesting to use then something ‘just around the corner’, as it is then more interesting to shoot it myself.

If it’s really high-quality footage, ‘digital makeup’ might also be very cool!

I think the key would be to just keep the form/look open to the entrants, so not limiting it more then ‘you have to use this footage for digital makeup’.

That’s my 2 cents :slight_smile:

some great topics there! i like the idea of digital makeup and set extensions. I also was hoping for the ‘four seasons’ topic, which is a combination of a few you suggested. I did get the impression you wanted this current challenge to be done using supplied plates. Also the topics you suggested remind me of the smaller topics back ages ago (ocean, water baloon, cannon fire) now they have evolved to be fairly large projects (i guess which is all up to the artists interpritation) but it all depends on the topic rather than the project size which determind how many people seem to enter.

it seems i agree with dutchman on the topics.

Dutchman I will continue to keep the contests as open as possible .

great keep em coming…

Here are a few more:

  • The Race
  • The Pilot
  • Angel Wings
  • The Ruin

#6

what about big or small crashes - maybe
cars or planes and
collapsing bridges or houses

Nice idea!
I think Digital Crowds would be really cool, it would give people a real challenge. Also the Craft Landing would be a nice one to have a go at, perhaps some sort of tribute.

#8

Love the craft landing idea…

here are some more:

  • Terminator…
  • Vampires…

#9

I also love the craft landing idea.

A aireal dogfight would also be cool.

#10

Crash Landing.

Funny you mention that…
Need Scripts for upcoming FXWars challenge

#12

Those scripts look great and the idea of a challenge using input from various forums is even better. The only thing is that creating all of this with CG characters might be difficult for some of us (myself included), obtaining live action shots might even be harder.

Would you be able to get some live action plates, possibly from another forum?
