IBM BLADECENTER H 8852 as renderfarm? (Software: 3dsmax)

Hi everyone,

This is my first time buying a renderfarm and I got a good deal on a server. For less then 5,500usd I could get this setup bellow.

Since I dont know anything about renderfarms could you please help me out and tell me if this is a good setup for 3dsmax and vray?

Also, if anyone have any tuturials on how to set it up as a renderfarm connected to a workstation I would be very grateful :slight_smile:

Setup:

IBM BLADECENTER H 8852 in total 210 GHz and176 Gb RAM.

5X

CPU: 2X INTEL XEON E5450 QUAD XEON @ 3,0GHZ

RAM: 16GB DDR2 ECC RAM

2X

CPU: 2X INTEL XEON E5630 QUAD XEON (HT) @ 2,53GHZ

RAM: 24GB DDR3 ECC RAM

2X

CPU: 2X INTEL XEON E5620 QUAD XEON (HT) @ 2,4GHZ

RAM: 24GB DDR3 ECC RAM

If you’ve got the budget and the know-how I think they’re a good idea - I’m all for consolidation. Bear in mind that chassis generally require chunky power setups:

You’ll also need to mount it in a rack and might have to look into cooling. On the plus side, you can probably buy switch blades, meaning that you can use a smaller rack chassis if you’re strapped for space.
