I want to use the Apple iPad as a Cintiq

#161

I take back my dissing of fingerpainting.

The line drawing with pogo does look interesting. Will have to wait to see what happens with that and which serious software developers pick it up.

pressure sensitive drawing on the ipad:

( sorry if this has been posted before but I didn’t read the whole thread )

for anyone interested; a compilation of drawings I did on my iPad, apologies about the speed and no pausing on finished result, I just compiled the vid quickly in youtube editor.

also most of these were done within half hour for my facebook drawing challenge group…

the last one was pretty horrible, the others were very nice  may i ask what is the software you guys use for that? is it photoshop or some apple software?

#165

LOL, ya I am still a beginner!

I used an app called Brushes. Though I have 2 other drawing programs for the iPad called Layers and Sketchbook Pro, the former is alright though a little laggy in playback, and the latter is a really nice sketch program, though I don’t really like its painting features (not to say they aren’t good, I just prefer Brushes style more).

#166

Brushes is amazing, it is my favorite app on the ipad.

And for those of you who were asking for a 2d anim app earlier, check out “Animation HD” , it is a $2 app that absolutely kicks ass for 2d animation.

#167

@sheepfactory: ya I was going to mention that earlier… Animation HD also just got a pretty good update. I really wish that Colors! would get an iPad release.

#168

Yea it was subpar before the update but the last update made it amazing, it is like a new app.

#169

for anyone still interested in, or already, using their iPad as a painting/sketching tool, a new app came to my attention yesterday.

ArtStudio

It has practically everything you could hope for. In fact, apart from the lack of a playback feature it has more functionality than almost every other painting app (that I know of) in the app store.

Runs very smoothly also. And is constantly being updated with from user feedback. (the the flickr gallery for a feature request thread).

Also I want to mention WebPad also for the iPad. Basically you open the app, and it broadcasts your sketch across the web (via a specific URL). Feature-wise it lacks practically everything but basic MSPaint tools (in fact it doesnt even have undo as far as I am aware). But being able to paint and have others watch live is pretty nifty.

The Wacom newsletter brought deviantART’s Muro to my attention. It’s a browser-based drawing tool that uses HTML5, so it can be used on an iPad. From the 5 minutes I spent with it, Muro’s not bad for a free app, although you’ll need a deviantART account to access the extra brushes.

deviantART’s Muro propaganda: http://news.deviantart.com/article/125373/

Hey thanks for the heads up. Art Studio is really great. It is definitely faster than brushes or sketchbook pro.

#172

Ya, once you get around the, admittedly, ugly-but-functional UI it runs really well. Some tweaks could be made here and there but it really out does a lot of what SBMP and Brushes have to offer. Consider that in both of those apps you can only zoom in about max 3000% (maybe more? point is there is a cap). In ArtStudio I tested the zoom and was at 30,000%. Obviously this is useless, but it was quick and seamless.

I am really liking it, though I wish the brushes would work a bit more like Colors! for the iPhone.

#173

I like it because it has really fast mirroring and has all the layer blending modes unlike brushes and sb pro.

Cant complain though, all three sketch apps cost me like $20 in total which is pretty cheap for what you get

#174

Ya, honestly I could buy 20 apps and still pay less than most pc programs.

I have quite a few drawing apps actually…

Brushes
SketchBook Mobile Pro (though for iPad it is just SBP isn’t it?)
ArtStudio
WebPad
Layers Pro (the worst of the bunch)
Animation HD
Harmonious (I don’t get it…)
Colors! (iPhone
Vellum (iPhone, again I don’t get it)

and a few others I am forgetting. :stuck_out_tongue:

#175

legit LOL! however, many ideas which seem insane or ridiculous at first can lead to some incredible stuff. My friend took a wacom tablet and combined it with a custom light table to make a poor mans cintiq…

#176

Just a heads up. Sketchbook pro got updated this morning and I dont know what kinda magic they worked but the drawing lag is nonexistant right now. It feels incredible to sketch on.

#177

Hmm, you think so? I dunno, it seems almost the same. Still not quite as fast as ArtStudio in my opinion. But at least they are listening to feedback, or at least, will be, now that they have the feedback option built directly in to the app.

#178

Just wanted to say, thanks and loads of <3! for all the good advise and links given here!

#179

Nope its nowhere near same. The mirror sketching doesnt slow down now. And there is no lag with pencil tools even with extremely fast moves. Its night and day compared to the old version really.

#180

You’d probably know better I suppose, I hadn’t used SBPM in quite some time. :scream:

@Alice: No problamo!
