I like Bridgman - what else is a must-have for figure drawing?

Hi,

I really like drawing studies from Bridgman (my favourite is Constructive Anatomy). But I would like to ask which other books on figure drawing / anatomy for artists are really good, or must-haves?

Another question (this is really another one, I do not want to constrain the above question): there’s two things that I miss in all of those Bridgman books that I know.

[ul]
[li]He never does any elaborate shading/rendering[/li][li]He doesn’t draw many complete figures[/li][/ul] Could you suggest a book that fills these gaps (I mean especially aiming at these gaps)?

But the first question is more important to me!

Must have books…ALL of the books by …Burne Hogarth

To fill the two gaps that you mentioned.
Especally the two listed below.

DYNAMIC LIGHT AND SHADE…by Burne Hogarth

DYNAMIC WRINKLES AND DRAPERY
DRAWNG THE HUMAN HEAD

You can get them all on the internet…Just google his name…BURNE HOGARTH

Best books out there on the subject of anatomy and complete figure drawing…Just my personal opinion and experience…:slight_smile:

I would recommend these three if you want to go into details. They are anatomy reference books.

Human Anatomy for Artists by Andras Szunyoghy and Gyorgy Feher
Human Anatomy for Artists: The Elements of Form by Eliot Goldfinger
Classic Human Anatomy: The Artist’s Guide to Form, Function, and Movement by Valerie L. Winslow

If you want to do posing, you can check out Burne Hogarth’s Dynamic Anatomy or Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators by Mike Mattesi

My new favorite is Hale’s Drawing Lessons From The Great Masters (Contains 100 marvellous drawings by classic masters besides the great instruction). Also like Jack Hamm’s books very much. For figure drawing his “Head & Figure”, “Cartooning figure” and “Animals” should be really valuable to study.
