I don't know how to get started...

#1

I have been searching online tutorials about mudbox for a almost a week. I found some good ones(flash videoes and html) and they are helpful. However, I couldn’t find one that can solve my problem. This problem becomes an headache to me now.

First of all I am new to mudbox. Never did anything with Mudbox before. I modeled a creature in Max and I need to up-res in Mudbox. This is an assignment for my class.

This is my model(I separate the body parts and assign different colors):

My teacher(he is not a mudbox expert) told me to seperate the body part before export to Mudbox because it will be easier to sculpt and easier to make normal projection. But the thing is, if I follow his way, I can’t make seamless detail.

I think I should get some ideas from here so that I can start working it. Also, when I click the UV View in mudbox, it didn’t Unwrap my model.

My questions are(please reply in point form):

  1. Should I export my model as 1 piece but only seperate the eye balls, teeth, tongue, nails and horns? (If your answer is no, please answer question 2 ; If your answer is yes, just go to question 3.)

  2. how can I make my model ready to export to Mudbox?

  3. How can I unwrap my model in mudbox, so that it will show the UV map in the UV view in Mudbox?

  4. do you guys know any high res full body tutorial that shows step by step creating normal or displacement map and paint texture in photoshop? because I can only find tutorials that do high res head and sphere only. I want to see a full characeter tutorial.

More advice is welcome. Thanks SO MUCH!

Thanks Oglu !!

I see. I have a save file before I seperated the body parts. I think I will use that one then.
So now in th Modify tab of Max, I need a Unwrap UVW modifier above the Editable Poly.

  1. Anythingn else to add to the Modify tab?
  2. Once I finish unwrap, the model is ready to export to mudbox?

yes if your uvs are clean… no overlapping or flipped uvs…
