Hypershade Problems Maya 2015

#1

Hi cg-people

I recently encountered a strange problem:

Whenever I create a new mia-material three things can happen:

  1. it all works like it should
  2. it doesn’t show the preview-sphere, just an empty material-window.
  3. the preview sphere is shown, but doesn’t update after whatever kind of change in the material. So if I put a bitmap on it, a reflection, a transparancy…nothing. The only thing that may update the preview-sphere is when I use a material-preset. But any changes after doing this aren’t shown either.

There are some error-messages I get. I don’t know if these are of any importance, but I’ll show you anyway. I’ll try to explain them as good as I can:

When I open this particular scene I get this warning:
// Warning: file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2015/scripts/others/hyperShadePanel.mel line 6868: The currently active tab is not a scene tab. This icon size change operation is not implemented for this tab.
If I open an emtpy scene I get no message, and after importing the same scene I stil ldn’t get a warning. But if I save it as a new scene and open that one the message is back.

If I add a bitmap to a material and hit the “go to output connection” button to go back to the material itself it just doesn’t do that and gives me this error:
// Error: file: C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2015/scripts/others/showEditor.mel line 2762: No object matches name: swatchShadingGroup.surfaceShader
If I hit the “go to output connection” button again it suddenly does work. Still no update on the preview-sphere though.

The funny thing is that the changes are visible within my viewport, and it also renders just as it should. And when I re-open the scene all the materials made before look fine again in my viewport. Any new materials are subject to the problem as described above.

I hope somebody understands what I’m trying to describe and with any luck anyone offers a solution

Thanks in advance!

PS:
If any more details (or maybe images to support) are wanted, please let me know

Anyone?..

Moved to the rendering subforum for you, maybe better luck there.

I’m not sure how to say this nicely, but this has always been the case for me with mental ray shaders. Generally, they work fine regardless of the swatch-preview. But they’ve never been consistent, across an array of GPUs and CPUs going back to 2004 now. I don’t experience (or notice) the error cough-ups you’re talking about, however. Not that I’ve noticed. I just stopped paying attention to the shader-ball previews a decade ago; they’re hit and miss, and only mildly helpful when they are hitting.

Thanks, but it’s not that the shader-ball isnt accurate, there is just nothing happening.
I did notice this doesn’t happen in all scenes, only in scenes in which I imported an FBX.
The “solution” I got so far is ExportSelected -> Exit Maya -> Start Maya -> Import

Thanks man! Appreciated
