Humble Flash site for local French Polisher

#1

Okay, I hadn’t seen any decent French Polishing sites before, so this one was a bit of a challenge: www.elitefrenchpolishing.com

Any thoughts?

Tech/Design Background:

It’s a small business with a growing reputation for some of the best craftsmanship around, so they wanted something professional and polished enough (excuse the pun) to appeal to higher-end commercial developers who might want an entire building done, whilst being small and friendly enough to not to intimidate private bread-n-butter customers who just want a chair re-finished.

The only compatability issue I’ve found is that Opera doesn’t like pop-ups launched from within Flash for some reason.

The entire site is completely dynamic, running off a MySQL database with PHP as the middleware.[/size]

The pop up idea is not so good… many users including myself are too lazy to turn off my firewalls and pop up blockers and that combined with the many ppl who don’t really know how to do this… you got a pretty big margin of ppl re-routing from your site cause they were either too lazy or too ignorant to watch it.

The average internet user this days has about 6 or 7 seconds of attention to a site. If you dont impress them then they’re as good as gone!

Keep it up!

Yeh, we went back and forth over this, and generally went for pop-ups as they were quicker to implement (and so within the strict budget) and an awful lot of successful sites still use them effectively. We’ve been testing this out on a wide range of people during development, and oddly enough, only designers were bothered by the pop-ups!!

I love the simplicity of it…

The only remark I can think of, is why the very large popupwindow? It does not need to be that big does it?

regarding the popups. I think its a matter of opinion. I don’t mind them, as long as I am notified that it is going to popup. I didn’t have to disable my popupkiller, just hit the relaunch button and it did. I think that most newer popupkillers allow popups that are initiated by the user.

And the thing were Opera won’t open the larger images is a bit annoying  but I’ll survive.

Thanks wirefixed

Opera seems to be quite buggy when it comes to Javascript. It’s always the last browser I’m left fighting with at the end of a project!!

A good point. It is a big pop-up, but there is good reason for it. The target audience for the site were unlikely to be using a screen resolution of higher than 1024x768, with very few using 1280x1024 +. The site already creates a warm atmosphere with the colours and the music, so it was important that all other distractions were removed from the screen in order to maintain the atmosphere. Therefore the window fills the screen. It’s difficult to create a sense of place when looking into it through a small window.

I am not a big javascript wiz. actually I know nothing about javascript. but isn’t it possible to just maximize the new window? Then it would be just right, in my opinion anyway

this page is very good

it’s “simple” and just unbelieveable stylish
this is what i call a good flashpage even if it is the page from a polishing company

It does maximise the window.
