Human Skin WIPs and Tips (Everyone feel free to post your own skin WIPS here too)

#1081

This is my first (real) attempt at skinshading I did within the last 3 hours. Feedback would be very appreciated. Any ideas of how to get thin parts like in the ears seam transparent? That would be really cool!

#1082

the model looks familar to me

nice to see it with some colour and shading. Looks quiet good… but the shadowborders are way too cool (blue) ,try to give it a luminous dark red-orange colour and use cooler(more blue) highlights. Or maybe try some reflection instead of specular.

#1083

Yeah that’s a model I downloaded some time ago, it was in a CGTalk reference model pack. Is it yours? It is a pretty cool model and I only wanted to try out the skinshader and not model a head, too.
One question to the max users? How do you build up your shaders? As for the base I took a raytrace material because it hase quite a lot of maps I can do. As said I did it without any tutorial and stuff because I couldn’t find any. So it could also be wrong. How did you do it? Some tips would be great! How can I do some effects like SSS and stuff?
I also don’t like like the one colored pretty dark area on the end of the chin. How can I change that? Are there somewhere some downloads of any skinshaders done by professionals so that I could learn from them?

Edit: Updated

Thanks for help

Yup, thats from my modelpack I posted a while ago here.

The new picture looks a lot better now, the skin seems healthier and more lifelike.
I dont now what causes the borders under the chin, nose etc. Maybe you use a oren nayar blinn shader wiith roughness set to default? If this is the case try to lower it or set it to 0.

One of the best shaders I´ve seen done with max comes from Reiv, maybe take a look here
He posted some tips and tricks.

Grugi: Thanks a lot for this really great model! After having finished the skinshader I will go for a head for myself and I think I’ve learnt a lot from your model. Always appreciate guys who share their hard work so that others can learn from it.
Thanks as well to Reiv who also helped me a lot with his tips in his toppic. I now built up a new skinshader from scratch and I am pretty satisfied with. The nasty lines vanished and I tried to give it a more realistic little sweaty and greasy look.

What do you guys think? As for now I am pretty satisfied with the result. The whole scene has 1 pointlight and is rendered within 44 Seconds on my slow 1.3 Gig. I am pretty proud

Hi everybody!

This is my latest skin shader. I don´t have a head model right now, so I tested it on an human hand model of me…

#1087

I´m not a fan of using photos as textures, but your hand looks really good. Maybe a bit too much spec and bump, looks a little bit leathery.

Would be interesting to see this hand in different angles with different lighting, because it seems that most of the shading is actually already in the photo.

I always prefer to use the photos only as a guide to build your own texture. Depend on the project, timeline etc. But thats a personal taste I think.

#1088

Hi grugi,

I know some of your stuff from cgworld. Pretty good work

I´m also usually not a big fan of taking photos as a texture, but in the moment I have no wacom and I don´t want to torture myself in painting them with my computer-mouse

I tried to remove most of the shading off the photo or just simply painted it over. I´ll render out 1-2 different angles later on for you.

anyway, thx for your comment.

Hi, I’ve been searching the internet for a few days looking for technical information regarding skin shading techniques when I came accross this forum.

I thought I would show you all the shader I have setup myself to simulate skin

now, I use Curious Labs Poser 5, which I know is not the program you all use, but please, I am new and I am just looking for pointers from professionals like yourselves on areas that need to be changed/improved.

thanks very much.

ok, onto the pictures, firstly I have to warn you that these are renders of the upper half of a nude female, so if your fine with that, READ ON!

I have done a total of 6 renders to test the shader under different lighting conditions, and created a gallery that you can view them in. the gallery is at the following link :

they are quite large renders, so I won’t post them directly here.

http://photobucket.com/albums/v142/templargfx/BeautifulSkin/

there is a password set, and the password to enter is voodoo
unfortunately you cannot make these open, so I needed to put a password on it, sorry

I have been working on this shader for well over 3 weeks now, slowly getting it looking better and better, and I am now at the stage where I need some feedback to know what to attempt to fix next.

thankyou all so much for your time.

Reacts well in all your lighting setups - looks like you’re almost there, it seems to fall apart on the forearm a little though - I have been having the same problem with photo real teeth - the arm kind of has a chalky rubber look where the highlight is tweaking out above the threshold.

What shaders are you using if you don’t mind me asking? (What software also)

Very close though.
Good luck

Templargfx: Nice job, looks great considering it’s a Poser5 render. Are you using faceoff’s “Real Skin Shader”? I’ve used Poser myself, and never got near those results, what I usually do, is take the model (I’m no modeller at all) out from Poser and load it in 3dsmax, and then work in there. IMO your shader looks a bit too red in some renders, but generally it’s very good. Only serious problem in order to achieve total realism, is the face… I think you’ve used V3 don’t you? I’ve seen her face so many times, and never looked real to me… I work with that model too, and it takes a lot of work to make it look like a real person. Anyway, I think your main point here is the skin. Excellent.

Ike.

Hello cANT,
I have to comment on your last skin - not really beautiful, but a great look! All those goose pimples and realistic greasiness. Congratulations!

#1093

Ikephoto : It was the Real Skin shader that started it all for me, I saw his tutorial on how to create his shader manually, and I took what I learnt running through this tutorial, and combined it with what I had already learnt on my own to create the original version of my shader.

then, over a period of 3 weeks I tweaked, tested, rendered, re-tweaked, restarted etc etc.

I’ve had a few MAJOR breakthroughs since the last renders, and I have put up a quick web page showing the Realskin shader by Face Off, My Shader and how it looks by default. I did 10 different renders (30 in total) and put them all together.

For those who know the Poser 5 Material room, this setup has 24 nodes in total per material!!

unlike the Real Skin shader, there is no mathmatics(manually entered or script driven) involved, but a clever use of TOON, Edge Blend, and Skin nodes linked and together on sever root nodes such as diffuse, specular, ambient, alternate diffuse and alternate specular.

this setup has a much bigger reaction to light colors than the last, and as a result I created 2 versions (the second version is not shown on the website link below)

please take a look at this bundle of renders (my shader is on the right, but this is explained at the top of the page) and give some more help! the renders where the skin has gone crazy coloured (you will see what I mean!) I have fixed this sortof!

Here is one of the renders from the page (my favourite!)

Working hard on this skin currently

#1095

pariah: I would put some more attention in your specular. Bump and Spec maps on the way? If they are allready there, I guess you might want to up the contrast. Female hands are hardest since the bumps should be subtle, unless you want to create an old witch or something…

Polygun: This is going good, I would go back to modeling though, the ear needs some more tweaking. The nose could use a couple more loops I think. I really like the shape of the mouth though!

I’ve done some updates in mapping (spec, bump and color) CnC is very welcome

Never satisfied, especially the eyes are damn hard to get right…

#1096

What do you mean about the nose? I dont want to crap up this thread with modeling discussion, but I’d just like a better explaination about your comment so I can try it out. Also, what about the ear?

You can reply here, or message me on AIM (sn: polygunner) if its against the rules of the thread

Here is the my lastetst 3D girl.
Note, everything is 3D, except the lower eye lid (the SSS effect is definitely not easy to recreate , I am still struggling on it) and the highlight on the lips are retouched with photoshop. This is just a rough layout, as a guide for next texture improvement. The final comp(photo filter, level adjustment.,etc) is done with Photoshop, too .
I think I 'd better to clarify which part is not 3D rendered as I don’t want to have any argument. ( I have see many arguments about real 3D render or 2D paint on cgtalk )
I am currently working on the texture of face, there is no texture on her ears and neck. I also have not cleaned up the deformation.

Cheers
p.s. oh, the hair and background is not 3D too.

looks nice… jack, only the brow area seems a little strange to much up… to vertical or something… it could be like this ofcource, but its looks od, she doesnt have the right expresion on here face to have such brows at the moment.

also the chin could have some more detail modeled, now its to smooth , would make her more real if there was something more there. where did you get the eye /iris texture? or have you painted it.

she would be more beautifull if there wasn t such a hard light on her, her nose shines a little to much i guess. its a pitty her head turns all white, the further you look up.

#1099

theres a lot of great stuff in this thread. (georgeous girl 3djack. She looks very cg, but in a sleek, polished way)

I’d join in with a wip for my short film

#1100

3djack: Nice work, I’m quite fond of the super intense lighting, however I do agree with ivo about the eyebrow, the proportions in the face look a bit strange

Goon: Great character, to make him look more appealing, you could try to add some red and blue tones to the texture, try some blue around the eyes, some red on the cheeks and nose and some yellow on the forehead… When I was doing the Merlin character (see avatar), David Komorowski, better known as the Hobbit Guy gave me some great pointers in texturing, Merlin is a very old piece and not that good to begin with but his advice is certainly still very valuable perhaps you should check out his work at www.thehobbitguy.com. I especially like the goblin, personally I think that’s one of the coolest and most appealing cg faces around.
