at the moment i have a colour, bump and spec map although these are all WIPs, the model is pretty much done though. The shader is based on a blinn with some tweaks to add rim lighting and sss fakes, at the moment it’s very “speculary”, at a later date i may start using environment mapped reflections but at the moment i dont have a lit scene to generate the maps from, unfortunately raytracing isnt viable for this project. Rendered in maya’s default renderer with a simple four point light setup. Note that the image has been slightly level tweaked in photoshop to add contrast. Any advice would be appreciated
Also note that the eyebrows are pretty much placeholders at the moment and im aware they are in the wrong place! I’ll probably do paint effects ones for the final piece.
Lookin better! inside of his ears seem verrry shiny? Lips are very red, maybe add some more detail there. I think adding even more detail to the bump would help it a lot.
just something ive worked on for quite a while now with shading. Still stuff needed to be fixed but its always an issue about weighing renderingtime against quality isnt it
Wow Pooby! That looks great! Maybe you should lower the bumps on the forehead a bit, and make the cheeks a bit (just a tad) less red. I’m impressed with the capabilities of G2, wish I had it!
I’ve been working on my skin shaders for some time, and ended up with something like this,
I started posting in the WIP 3D Stills forum but got very little response (just one!). I worked on it some more time, and here it is. It’s been done in Brazil R/S which i had the chance to try yesterday. I had been working with the SSS Fast Skin shaders in 3ds Max 7 but couldn’t get the grip of the parameters… To me, the Wax shader in Brazil was much easier to use and fine tune. It was almost like and instant success!! (well, not really, instant= 3 or 4 hours…) And I’m quite happy with the results, excepting maybe the highlights… (??)
Oh, and by the way, I’m not a modeller, so I used Vic3 from Poser with a couple of morphs. Any crits are welcome! Thx.
dobermunk: I don´t quite like it either, but that’s what I have so… will have to work with it! Any ideas on how to improve eyes/eyebrows?
pooby: If it’s based on your girlfriend… i’ll probably have to shut up!
fast4ry: You want me to make it stronger? She’s going to get too red, but i’ll try it anyway. I’m not sure if it can be done in Brazil for version 6, I’ve used 7… Probably yes you can.
Oh, and to everyone. As I said, I’m giving a try to Brazil (just had it for 2 days) and in some renders I’m getting strange artifacts (blue or greenish pixels all over the image) specially in the transparencies. I’ve managed to correct them dealing with “image sampling” in some images, but sometimes I can’t get rid of them… any help? And last thing… I’m using Blinn highlights at the moment with a specular map I made, will Phong work better?
That’s looking really nice. All that’s missing is that peach fuzz look on the skin. I’m interested in what your G2 settings are and what lights you’re using. I’ve always been a big fan of area lights but they don’t work correctly with G2.
I almost gave up on G2 because of this, because in my book, area lights are pretty much the only decent lights to use.
What I did here was to make my own ‘area light’ out of an array of spinning point lights with motion blur.
As for the settings, I just fiddled around in the Subsurface scattering section… I don’t have the settings to hand (as i’m at home right now and I did this at work) But I don’t know how much they’d help out of context. I think a lot of the effect depends on your other surface parameters and the size of the model etc…
But I can say, that I remember the SSS was quite extreme. I didn’t use much subtlety when it came to the controls. I just ramped it all up, but made the translucency not penetrate too far into the model.
I think just the same. If this is a collaborative thread there should be a clearer feedback (that almost everyone needs) about the way to go with their shaders. Each of us, has probably been working on the shaders up to the point of not being able to see clearly what to do, just for the sake of passing hours and hours in front of this same image with very mild variations. That’s when the rest of us can come in and help. I don’t think that when Leigh started this thread he wanted to have an enormous gallery of plain WIPs that showed little improvement render after render… IMO (and Leigh correct if I’m wrong) this is not a “show off” thread, but a “I’ve_worked_on_this_pic_so_much_I_don’t_know_what_else_to_do_with_it,so_please GUIDE_me!” thread.
But thinking about the specifics of each different program, almost all the details need to be known in order to give that guidance. And that is a problem, as there are no magic recipes that help in all situations. But I think we should tend to go that way, instead of just posting our pics and letting go…
That base “ivo D” was talking about is still not there (and you can see it browsing through the images, there are still many that haven’t passed the plastic-skin level…), so let’s try to set it ourselves!
I hope this post is not going down the drain, and I see there’s interest on this. I’ll be posting my settings soon if you want to (not because they’re good, but because i think I should share them for others to work on them and improve them).
So, come on guys, let’s all write the definitive book on skin shading!! Thx for looking.
That’s exactly what I wanted it to be And hehe yeah I am a woman
I feel bad because I started this thread but have been so busy this year I’ve not had time to keep up with it all. It would be nice to go through the thread and condense all the best information into one big pile of tips. The idea was to post your image, explain what you’d done so far to create it, and then let people brainstorm ways of improving it.
