Human Character Concept Art

#1

(Picture just edited)

Greetings, I’m newbie here.

This is a concept art of protagonist of my short 2d animation called The Traveler, which is my school project.

He is a future space traveler. I designed that costume based on astronaut suit and simplified it. Personality wise, the hero is humble, brave and adventurous.

As for the animation, it will be cartoony in visual. I will be using a comical style such as speech-bubble and dramatic texts. Yet, this is for teenagers and above due to the blood and gore contents. Total duration planned to be around 5-10 minutes. ‘Style’ used will be like how the concept art looks like.

Please let me hear your opinion of this concept art and idea (if you would).

This project is still under development. However, you could stay tuned to the updates on http://invisibeland.tumblr.com/thetraveler (I have more artworks inside my blog)

Your kind support will be pretty much appreciated since all of this are part of my school project to be achieved. Thanks.

He torso seems really long while his legs quite short. Is this intentional? If not, then you need to learn the standard proportions of human beings (any anatomy/figure learning resource will teach this).

It’s hard to differentiate between the materials–they all look the same. You need to learn about the different surface properties inherent to the typical materials we see around us–shiny and reflective surfaces, matter surfaces, transparent/semi-transparent surfaces, wood, plastic, metal, glass, chrome, leather, cotton, nylon, skin, hair, etc. A good artist should be able to define the various materials in an image so the viewer can tell what they are immediately.

Don’t use black for shadows. Shadows have colors, and what color depends on factors such as:

-What the local color is on the surface
-What color the light source(s) are
-The effects of radiosity/color bleed

If you don’t have a grasp on those factors, then you need to learn them, as they are some of the most essential foundations that all artists must know.

If you haven’t already done so, I highly recommend you visit the Art Techniques & Theories forum (linked below in my signature). Read the sticky threads there, as they contain a ton of very helpful tips and resources that will make a huge difference in your artistic growth.

^ Thanks for the comment. What a helpful there.

Regarding to the lower body part, yes my intention was to create low-crotch suit. But it is cheesy now. I am aware of your tips, though, yet I’m still sharpening my skills towards the different surface material (e.g. skin and fabrics) glows and shades effect.

Nevertheless, great comment. Thank you very much!

Another artwork, this will be the generic villain. He is a hunter who always try live and surviving in dangerous land of the planet with the rest of the men. However, this group of human has lost their humanity and that is symbolized by the steel mask which represent of having no human soul and mind.

The intended style is cartoony. Just like what you see in the concept art. Thick and bold lines.

Let me know what you think of the design.
