I have unwrapped the whole car, and I have the parts all over the place… I was told that there is a button on 3ds max that puts them together and auto scales… called uv packer i think…
so i guess there is also in maya right?

the equivalent in maya is the layout uvs tool. It has settings for prescaling to world or object space before packing, different rotation settings, and some other settings for padding between shells.
