How to setup a render farm on blade server rack?

#1

Hi all,

I recently purchased a blade server rack and was wondering how to set it up as a render farm. I hope to use it to render animations from Maya using Mental Ray.

Can anyone recommend a good batch rendering software, preferably that does not require extra licences or just use the default program Backburner.

I know you said you don’t want to buy licenses, but to be honest with you Deadline is really the way to go. Its rock solid and the support is second to none, while back burner support is basically none

I use Deadline and I often thing back about how I wish I started using it years ago

you can just use backburner but the main thing is that you need network licenses of Maya to render with Mentalray on a network.

one network license of maya equals four network rendering nodes, if you have a stand alone license you can contact Autodesk and upgrade that to a network license.

How many nodes do you have? Is this for professional work, or just personal projects? If your just playing around, you might be able to use free student licenses for your render nodes. I setup MR standalone on three old machines for the fun of it, and backburner worked fine for that. If your not going crazy with plugins or fancy pipeline workflows, you can probably just use backburner.
