How to render projection paint

#1

I have been trying to get my head around projection paint for 2.49b since I need to paint large pieces of terrain. Simple snow on mountain tops.

I have successfully followed a couple of tutorials step by step, but I cannot render the result. The render window just shows me the normal gray.

Can someone help me sort this out? Thank you.

Hello,

First I never used 2.49 so this answer could be completely wrong.
But I’m learning 2.5 and have tried the projection paint with some success

I found out that you do the 3d painting on a “temp” texture that you load in the uv/image editor.
After you are finished painting the texture you should save the image. Apply a material to your object and use the saved image as a texture map for color (with the same uv’s as used when painting).

Basically when you render you see the applied material on your object.
When painting you see/edit not the current material but an other map that you applied in the uv/image editor.

Projection-painting prepares a new image containing the result. I always carefully save that image. Then, the image becomes the basis for a new “image” material that’s added to the object.

Bear in mind that the user interface can show you the result interactively, but the renderer needs a material. Projection painting is simply “one way to prepare an image.”

@film842 you may want to watch this to understand how you apply the texture to the material once you’ve finished painting it.

the part you’re missing is at about 1:24

hope this helps!

Gentlemen…Many thanks for your input. You cut right to the chase and gave me the framework to sort it out. My project has been at dead stop for two days because I could not figure this out no matter how many tutorials I followed or reading of articles I did.

I have not tried it yet, but I fully expect it to work now that I understand the overall concept. Anyway, I’m off to the edit suite and will post back. Thanks again.

Well, I couldn’t make it work. I got close but could not get the saved image onto my object. I think I’m making a small error somewhere and I’m going to keep banging away at it.

I save a new image in the UV textures window, then paint it onto my terrain in texture mode. When complete, I save the image again. I then go back to the 3D window, select the object, and go into edit mode. I then add the saved image as a texture to the object.

However, the render shows only gray, so I don’t know where I’m going wrong.

You are using the correct UVmap under “map input” AND have the UV map on, right?

Yes. I just went through the process with a cube successfully. I unwrapped it as a smart unwrap, made an image, painted it on and it rendered out correctly.

However, when I bring in my piece of terrain (obj file) and go through the same process, it will not render. I’m going to keep trying.

Got it. However I had to start by making a new terrain and going from there. No luck with projection painting on previously made terrain .obj files, but at least I’ve gotten this far. I’ll keep banging away until I figure out the .obj file problem. Thanks for the help.
