How to move a vertex along a edge?

#1

Could somebody tell me if it is possible to move/slide a vertex along a edge? (Where the vertex makes up the edge)

For example in da same manner as doin a right-mouse button cut on a edge, and moving the vertex.

I’m a wings3d n00b, so pardon me if the question is to obvious (i did an extensive search, but could find a solution anywhere).

Select the vert you want to move, righclick on move, select the edge to move along, and move it.
If you hover the mouse pointer over move, you will see that in the bottom left corner of the window,
it will say something like L:move along std axis,M:move along norman,R:select axis to move along.

It does that for all commands, great feature.

make sure you go to edit- preferences -advanced -advancemode to get the right click menu

Ah thanks!

For other situations a slightly different approach might also be useful.

Select the vert you want to move
Scale | Uniform > (use RMB / MMB option - choose point to scale from)
Select vert on the other end of the relevant edge
Drag as required (eyeball info readout top left for % travelled)
Accept when vert in correct position.

Why use this instead of move?

  1. If you hold shift during this op. wings will constrain the ‘step’ to 100% steps - so it’s very easy to get the vert being moved exactly on top of the ‘destination’ vert. Doing this, then selecting whole object and applying Object | Cleanup will effectively ‘fuse’ the 2 verts into one.
This is similar to the Edge | Collapse command - but with a difference, as the new ‘fused’ vert is at one end of the edge, rather than the middle (as in Collapse)

  2. There may be situations where you want to move a vert a % of the edge length, rather than a linear amount - as with move. (Holding Cntrl, btw when using scale, constrains to 10% steps, Cntrl + Shift, 1% steps.

Also, well worth investigating the Edge | Slide command - if you want to slide more than one vert which share common edges.

The shift / cntrl keys can be used to constrain all relevant commands, btw.

Puzzledpaul, that was a nice trick

Found out this is also very handy--> Scale | Axis > (RMB - pick axis)

Its almost the same as what Daftie told, but with your % moving available.

One of the great things about wings (imo) - many ways of getting the same result

If you choose the Scale | Axis MMB option this will let you choose a new origin (as well as the vector axis) - so you end up with the same result / options as the orig scale uni one. (albeit with extra steps)

Since Flatten Axis is the same as Scale axis 0%, you can also use the flatten command.

If you intend doing a lot of (individual) vert sliding, it might be worthwhile you investigating how default commands work (see help) as this is the nearest you can assign such a command to a hotkey (at present).

Yup,the old perl motto TIMTOWTDI most certainly applies to Wings as well

a nice set of snapping tools would really help in wings

Just incase you weren’t aware.

Holding down shift while moving, extruding, etc. Will snap by 1.0 units, holding down ctrl will snap by 0.1, and holding down shift + ctrl will snap by 0.01. (All in Wings units.)
