there is no magic anymore…
in the last two years they changed there workflow…
from thousand lights in a scene and a reyes renderengine to only a few lights and a pathtracer…

pickup the free renderman version and do the tutorials there…

i dont think this is about software: its about the craft of lighting/shading a animation

i’m not a lighting artist at all, i’m a compositor and so i worked with some lighting artist.
i guess there is no magic formula to follow

do what make the scene look good. if you can light and shade a still then there is not much way to go for animation. sometimes the light for a frame works for the whole scene, sometimes you need to animate the lights

Hi,

It is not about the software (almost at all…) it is really about knowing how to light a shot, understanding what creates interesting lighting and what not. Planning the intention and role of the light in the shot
before putting any light at all. I know this sounds very vague, but I believe that is what matters the most,
and that can only come with experience and testing.

I’ll leave you a couple links of books that I’ve found very helpful and you might want to take a look.

I really recommend you to take a look at this one if you are starting, very good information and you will get a solid understanting of the basics on what does “good lighting” means:

Digital lighting and rendering by Jeremy Birn

https://www.amazon.ca/Digital-Lighting-Rendering-Jeremy-Birn/dp/0321928989/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1465488654&sr=1-1&keywords=birn

once you are done with that, and of couse worked on personal examples and projects, I’ll leave
this two that I’ve found to be very interesting lectures:

light science and magic:
https://www.amazon.ca/Light-Science-Magic-Introduction-Photographic/dp/0415719402/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1465488580&sr=1-1&keywords=light+science+and+magic

Light science physics and the visual arts:
https://www.amazon.ca/Light-Science-Physics-Visual-Arts/dp/0387988270/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1465488607&sr=1-2&keywords=light+science+physics+and+the+visual+arts

hope that helps

Cheers!
