How to draw a picture filled the feeling of life?

#1

I am unsure whether my question is clear enough or not but I noticed that when I do drawing practices based on actual living things. They have a feeling of weight, life, and naturalness that I can’t replicate when I draw from my mind.

When I compare these observation made drawings with non observation ones, the non observations ones look fake and manufactured.

My art teacher said the only way to learn these things is to draw more and more but I was wondering if there were any good books specialized on movement or just tips in general on how to see things so I can make my progression to making quality non observational drawings?

I am following my teacher’s advice but the progression has been slow though I do see the small improvements between my drawings of this month and drawings of four months ago. I am just wondering if you guys have more info so I can improve faster.

In short, I want to learn how to make my drawings look alive and natural without reference.

I am sorry if this topic has been covered before but I did do a search on it and didn’t find anything.

A good way to practice this is to try out gesture drawings- draw random shapes and then fill them up with ‘people’- after a while you get a sense of the types of shapes that are more natural and expressive.

Post your stuff- start a wip thread in the 2d wip forum and let us all crit you into the ground.
