How to control the particle distance from mesh?

#1

Hello!

I’ve added a particle to my candy character to create a “sugar” effect. I made the mesh live, then used the particle tool to add the particles to the object. My problem is that most of the particles are too far from the surface of the object so it’s giving an undesired shadow when rendered.

How do I control the distance of the particle from the mesh?

Is it necceary to paint the particles? If not an easier method would be to emit from surface/faces where you want paricles, and control the distance from the surface with the emitter.
Failing that you could make the mesh a passive and attract the particles to the surface.

No not necessary at all, that’s the only way I knew to do it. How would I convert the surface into an emitter?

good, so all you need to do is select your object, go to nParticles and emit from object. Then in the emitter change the type to surface. You can then use the min/max distance to control how far away from the surface particles are emitted. You could also map a noise to the rate to get some clumping or soft patterns through the particles.

Thank you very much! That worked for me.
