How to add texture to a painting?

#1

I’ve tried a few methods and I can’t seem to get the same texture as pictures like this:

I used the edit>fill option and that isn’t even close to the effect I want.
What I am doing now is coloring regularly with a hard round brush and then duplicating the layer and using a texture brush and coloring over the picture, but I don’t think that is the right method. Do I just start my painting with a textured brush instead?

Please any tips would be appreciate. Is there a certain texture brush that I can use for this type of look.

You may wish to make use of layer types.

for example, make a new layer above your painting, paint on a texture, then change the layer blend mode to something like multiply.

Alternatively a cute little trick i picked up somewhere is to fill a new layer with a colour of your choosing, then hit the ‘quick mask mode’ (bottum button on your toolbar).

from here, use your brush tool with your texture on it to paint onto the colour layer. once you’ve gotten your selection hit the quick mask mode button again, ctrl-shift-i to invert your selection, then hit delete. for even more fancypants on your texture layer, go to layer > layer style > outer glow. you can also use ‘inner glow’ and ‘drop shadow’ to mess with the texture layer even further

hope you can use any of this
cheers
