How do you make (and apply) Separate game animations?

Hi all.
My name is Michael and I’m a second year design student focusing on 3d modelling in 3DS Max.
Recently I created this little guy in my spare time:

He’s a little choppy I know, but I want to use him as I learn different aspects of creating games- probably in Unity. I know how to set up a CAT rig and create a basic walking/ running animation. My question is this- how do I save individual animations (walking, idle, jumping) etc in 3ds max- and how do I switch between different animations ive created or saved? I cant find info on how to do this anywhere! Thanks!

Hello Michael,

Most animations are done as separate files, exported from the animation package, and then applied to a character file that is placed into a game engine (such as Unity or UDK). Common animations would include a walk, run, stand, attack, death, jump, fall, land, etc.

Many animations blend out of an into a common pose, usually a stand pose. The game engine then plays the correct animations in the order set up by the designer. The result is a series of different animations playing in such a way that the character appears to be performing one fluid action.

I hope that helps.
