hi im new to mental ray and 3ds max 6 i read the shader Discussion but couldnt find any info on using the glare lume shader do i have to Assign it to the skilight map or the enviroments maps panel.

First the Glare shader is “hidden”. Probable since they didnt have time to fix it in time for release. Its a bit unstable. At least for me.
You have to edit the lume.mi file located in: \3dsmax6\mentalray\include.
Make sure you save a copy of the original file just in case…
Just open in a texteditor and scoll down a little until you find:
gui “gui_Glare” {
…
…
“outputTypes” “-tag”,
“hidden”
Delete: “hidden” + the: , (comma) in the line above. Save the file.
Now the Glare shader should be visible in the material editor.
Glare is a post render effect so to use it go to the render panel. Make sure you are rendering with MR and then go to Renderer -Camera shaders - Outputshader and click on map and select Glare.
To change the setting you have to drag it to a free Sample slot in the Material editor.
I havent got it to work with a quality setting below 3 so set it to that and raise the spread for more pronounced effect.
Using Streaks crashes Max for me so be aware…
