How do i start learning After Effects?

#1

I downloaded a bunch of tutorials from the internet that all deal with the very very basics of AE.I’ve understood the interface, what each panel does, where the various options, effects etc are…i’ve also looked at a few examples but i am at a loss on starting something of my own…i don’t really know how and what to practice. when i started learning 3ds max, i started with modeling. i learned modeling, then collected a few reference images & started modeling the various objects, then i started learning texturing & collected more references to practice my texturing. Is there any similar process behind learning AE? please help me start learning. Thank you.

Learning AE is the same as learning 3D programs. Start with basics of building type and other elements. Not just type but what effects you can put on type to get it to look a certain way. Just dive in and experiment. Try to emulate a piece in just AE. Check out sites like videocopilot, which is a very good place to start. But don’t just do tutorials you need to also think about how you can take that tut and combine it with other things to makes something new. When I started AE I worked with almost no camera for 2 months b/c a camera just complicates things. And if you get stuck go to the internet or message boards to ask for advice or help. Just dive in and start making things, is really the best advice to give. Good luck!

I know videocopilot was already mentioned, I would highly suggest starting there though due to the fact you can download the project files and not worry about finding footage its all provided. It will also help you see what type of clips work best as a plate. Oh and I know its tempting, but leave particles and things of that nature alone until you are very comfortable with the UI.

Best of luck!
