How do I get fine controls to ride on blends

#1

Hi There,

I’m busy trying to rig up a face a bit differently to the way I’ve done in the past with pure a blendshape approach. After working on rigs at work that have secondary fine controls that ride on the face after blends have been activated. I’m addicted to having that kind of control that fine controls can give you as an animator.

I’ve run into a snag trying to set it up on my rig in maya. After watching some tutorials and looking for answers I got nothing… I’ve tried the changing the deformation order on the head but no cigar.

Here’s what I got:

Head geo – rigged with joints

lips geo – skinned to same joints as head

rivets – that ride on the lips geo

fine controls – parented under rivets and skinned to head geo

Smile blendshape applied to head geo. (this is the problem part) when I dial in the smile blend, the fine controls stay behind even if I change deformation order to all possibilities. I’m missing out on something and doing something wrong.

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Regards

-Paul

Hi!
Have you applied the BS to the duplicated lip geo?
Rgds,

Doh!

It didn’t work when i applied it to the lip_geo, but what I did do was duplicate the original head so it had all faces not just the lips. Then applied the Dup as a blend to the original, and set it’s values to 1.
Then applied a BS to the Dup head and it works!
The rivet is on the Dup mesh and the joint weighted to the Original.

Can’t believe it was actually that easy. Thanks!

Actually i just saw now that it’s not working, i’m getting some extra transforms…
