I recently decided i wanted to go into this CG industry, i have a background in photography with a real fantastical aesthetic, i love story telling using myths, magic etc. I was first drawn into CG because i wanted to create fantasy backdrops for my photos, which led me to look into matte painting. However the more i looked into cg the more i liked character modelling as well( loved the realism and i felt like i could have more control over the character i use for my images) and i also came across some amazing 2d fantasy concept art that were just out of this world. I have an interest in creating characters and putting them into backdrops that tell a story. Haha i am suffering from i want to try everything “syndrome”. I started learning matte painting, some digital painting and maya at the same time. I am managing but it just leaves for little time and feels like there is no focus. How would you suggest i go about this? and how did you decide what you wanted to focus on? I thought maybe i should begin to learn anatomy for characters and carry on then later on set myself projects that require a concept character and matte background?. Would love your advice the future seems muzzled not sure where exactly i want to walk into.
Thanks guys
How did you discover what aspect of CG suited you best?
“Post questions about which schools to attend, courses to take, your education experiences and recommendations.”
To be honest, the thread of your questioning as I’d perceived you’ve outlined initially, does not relate to the premised header for this board above specifically, but rather a generalised query based upon relevant experiences via other artists opinions, whether subjectively and/or objectively offered.
If that is indeed the case, and seriously if your intent is to progress as a digital artist in either an freelance or industry role, then I’d strongly recommend not only in terms of an effective tuition pathway per se, but also efficiency in developing those skillsets, ATM you’d mentioned have given rise to a certain amount of confusion ie:
