How can I put a colour texture into scalar value?


I came from softimage background. Softimage mental ray will automatically put a colour->scalar node in between to convert colour information into scalar. However in Maya, it doesn’t seem to have such convertion node. Do I even need one? Do I just load in a texture file from scalar value?

Eg: the shinyness of a material. I want to drive it by a texture instead of values.
