How (and why) to learn Mudbox

#1

Hey all, I’m an Animation Mentor student who has a license of Mudbox from the Autodesk Entertainment Suite. I’m looking at installing it and seeing what it can do but can someone explain exactly why I’d want to use it vs another modeler? I’ve got some general modeling/animation experience (a bit of Lightwave, casual Modo user now) but I’m not entirely understanding what Mudbox does vs other modelers.

Also, since this is one of the few forums that doesn’t seem to have a tutorials thread, any sites or tutorials that are good for getting my feet wet? I’ve found Mudbox Hub and Mudbox Central and am browsing what they have to offer now. Thanks!

mudbox isnt a modler…
mudbox is a standalone sculpting and painting tool…
you cant model, animate, or render animations in it…
its mainly for detailing and 3d painting…

but its really cool for blendshapes...
maya and max will read the sculpting layer as blendshapes...

give it a try mudbox is really easy to learn...
you have it in a day or two...

for tutorials open up the mudcommunity tab…
