How am i doing sofar?

hi! i recently started painting for real after i got my tablet. i think i’m moving along ok but i’d like any suggestions in what i have sofar. currently i’ve only done half of one painting and some test paintings. what i do is i simply scan around looking at tutorial pictures(and reading a little) to get a small idea of how i should work. i like to be given the stright out truth…so don’t go easy :slight_smile:

the test paint i did today in PS try to get a hang of shading. the origonal is painted in black and white but i added a color overlay to make it look like a charchol drawing.

thei s the painting i haven’t finished yet. its kind of a test painting but i want to practice and make some that looks good but not final.

my problem is that i think i mixxing up styles and i’m not consistant in the half done painting above. i’d also like to know if the smudging in the first picture is ok…

You should try to walk before you run. Doing highly finished surfaces is not what you should be attempting. Right now you have trouble getting just proportions right, so you should be drawing first–learing to get your shapes accurate. Then, when you start learning about value, do simple limited value paintings of just two values first, then three, then four. Don’t worry about clean/tight rendering at first–just get the values right–where highlights, form shadows, and cast shadows should be. Once you have that down, start introducing color into your work–that’s one of the most complex things to master, so we can talk about that later when you’re more comfortable with the simpler stuff.

well, recently i started straying from anime and on to doing more original stuff…i admit my heads are a little off but i’m still not fully used to using a tablet, i can’t simply turn the tablet like i can on a regualar one so its pretty awkward…i guess i should practice more. i’ve recently got off of being grounded so i can work at it more. i’ve been grounded every weekend since i got my tablet 4 weeks ago T_T so i really feel like i’m not were i should be…my only experiance is the first day i got it, and the occational sneak on when i can…

but i’m a gonna be a sketchin like a crazy this weekend!!!
