Can Houdini pass maya with it’s tools???
I always heard that that Houdini is a complete softwere while all other 3D programmes are not? Is this true? can houdini Do modeling to rendering? and all the things in between like rigging, animating,Texturing, sculpting,Dynamics,?

I am a maya artist and from what i can see maya can’t be passed it has a Good modeling workflow and tools (with modeling toolkit in 2014&2015) .also amazing rigging and animating tools with some Scripting it ROCKS from what i heard),Texturing (with a node based Hypershade) and awesome photo realistic Rendering with Mental ray or Vray or arnold.
and awesome Nucleas Technology to run simulation from Water,Fire,Fog,breaking object…also ncloth, nhair, ncache

so can Houdini pass Maya with all these things? Modeling,Texturing, rendering,Dynamics?? I know you guys will say YES cuz u might be get used to Houdini but pls answer me with your real experiences than just saying Houdini is the BEST! :buttrock:
if i post on the wrong section Forgive Me
thanks

Depends on your definition of “pass”- which sounds like winning a majority of 3D seats based on a feature for feature comparison.

If every feature in Houdini was say 1.1 times “better” by some agreed definition, AND pricing AND packaging were exactly the same, I would say it is very unlikely that Houdini would pass based on Maya’s current installed base. Happily this is not the case. The softwares are different, they have different strengths and work well together (and separately).

By a different definition such as which package has broad, directable, flexible, and integrated dynamics, I think one could say (based on Houdini VFX penetration), that Houdini has passed Maya. On the other hand, Maya is used for many fx shots as well, so if it is useful, one could also argue that Houdini has not passed Maya for high-end VFX.

And you are right, Houdini is a complete 3D solution (more than VFX), with solid procedural modelling, lighting, character animation, motion graphics, rendering, comp networks, etc. I believe that these areas are much better than people who haven’t tried Houdini are led to believe. So, best to try it out and then make comparisons … but not on cgtalk that prohibits comparisons.

In general, I think it is possible for any software to “pass” any other software by focusing on a user segment and doing the best job of addressing those needs.

The only thing certain is change.
