Houdini default reset?

#1

I have been helping switch a company over from Debian into centOS linux over the last few weeks.

We have successfully setup Maya/Vray/Nuke modo etc.

Houdini 14 seemed to have installed correctly but I notice that it doesn’t seem setup with default preferences.

Though it doesn’t matter in the larger picture as far as regular user usage I did notice that the shelves are missing items and certain things seem out of place.

Where on linux (centOS/red hat/fedora flavor) are the Houdini prefs located?

Also is it like Maya where deleting the prefs forces a brand new default prefs?

I can’t see the create particles items in the shelves. Little things like that that are off.

Just want to get a good vanilla install for people coming in to learn/use Houdini.

Thanks.

Yes, it’s like maya, you can just delete the prefs folder and it will reset to the default. To locate where that folder is open up the textport in Houdini and just type:

echo $HOME

Navigate to that folder and locate your Houdini version. That’s normally the folder containing all the settings. In your case it would be “houdini 14.0”. I am not shure about linux, since I am currently using windows and can’t test it. Default on linux is “~/houdiniX.X/houdini.env”
For the missing shelves make shure you are running “Houdini FX” and not “Houdini”.

     Hope that helps.

Ok that found the location.

Then I found the folder. deleted all the prefs and while the interface looks new again I still see no way to induce create particles. It is like something is missing.

I can’t even do a general tutorial. Mind you this is a tutorial I did at home with no trouble. The shelf is there and even if the shelf isn’t there I can TAB and start typing create or particles and find what I need.

So there is just something wonky. I think I am going to install 15. I am currently looking at 14.0.444

Thanks for the help.

Maybe it’s turned off. Have you tried clicking on the plus icon at the end of the last shelve and navigate to shelves entry and check if particles is ticked on?

But you’re right, this really is a little strange because it’s usually there by default.

Yeah, it is weird. Not happening at home.

I figured it out. Once I deleted the preferences I noticed that the IT guy was using a custom application launcher and that the launcher was pointing to houdini escape. Once I switched it to Houdini Master with the preferences folder deleted on launch everything came back.

It works fine now. Thanks. Learning process. :buttrock:
