HotKeys, What are yours?

#1

Ok, it’s little secret that beyond having the right tools at hand, workflow is everything.

So, what is your hotkey setup? It will be very interesting to see how many different setups there are amongst the Wings3D users, and to test them to see just which setup feels most comfy.

#2

i unfortunatley do not use the keyboard very often, except for tab(for entering precise coordinates) and control for deselecting large areas. never got into the habit since mouse mode is quick for me.

#3

Hi icr82nz,

thank you for the reply :slight_smile:

#4

My hotkeys are the defaults, except that tweak is set as “T” for me. :smiley:

#5

Ive changed all my keys to be near the alt (camera)… i use maya camera mode and i dont like to go far away from the camera manipulator to execute a tool…
and most of my tool are similar to xsi’s shortcuts… so extrude normal to me is ctrl+d and my scale proportional is ctrl+x…
My tweak is T as well and my virtual mirror on is shift x and off is shift z.

bevel is b and the only one far away from the camera to me is select loop (l) that one i am too used to let go…

thats it mates

Cheers

Loggie

Just realised some keys that arent in use. So heres an updated list of my hotkeys.

All the defaults, in the exception of these :
Move|Normal - J
Bevel - H
Extruded|Normal - K
Tweak - T

Just a small list. Hope it helps some people out there!:smiley:

#7

Much of the default Shortcut for me here except for a few ones;

T=Tweak Mode

Shift-V=Virtual Mirror

Shift-B=Break Virtual Mirror

Shift-C=Loop Cut

CTrl-Shift-B=Bevel

That’s about it.

Hey. lot’s of different setups between us for sure, and many the same, such as “t” = tweak :slight_smile:

My setup is totaly different in many respects than most of yours, and though maybe not be as good as some, I quickly got used to it and feel right at home using such:

F1 = move normal
F2 = move x
F3 = move y
F4 = move z

F5 = extrude region normal ( I use this as extrude most of the time unless I specificaly require the seperations extrude delivers )
alt/F5 = extrude normal
F6 = extrude x
F7 = extrude y
F8 = extrude z

F9 = scale uniform
F10 = scale x
F11 = scale Y
F12 = scale z

  • = rotate x
    = = rotate y
    \ = rotate z

h= bump
I = inset

Shift/b = bevel

alt/I = similar

m = VM create
n = VM freeze
alt/n = VM break

k = loop cut
; = previous loop

’ = next loop

, = select less
. = select more

j = bridge
p = put on

u = undo

The rest are basicaly default

Now I know that the F keys are way up there, and feel kinda awkward at first, but once ya get used to them it’s almost too easy just sliding side to side by feel, also, I find that placing the keyboard down on your lap allows for the angle to become comfy when working with these keys like this, especialy when your chair has armrests to rest your arms on.

Hey! Nice setup Xtrude!

Infact, may i use some of those layouts? :stuck_out_tongue:

#10

Hi AR, glad to hear that, let me know what you think. Hope it speeds things up for you some :slight_smile:

#11

I really don’t know what my hotkeys are, even though I barely ever go into the menus when I model. The reason is that I use this Speedpad thing from Belkin. Basically 3 of the keyboard keys are all my axis transforms. Holding up on the directional pad makes the 3 keys Scale, holding left makes them rotate on each axis. Down on the directional pad deselects everything. The other keys all have 2 or 3 functions each, for extrudes, uniform scale, select loop, ring, etc.

It took a while to get used to, but it makes things go so fast. Looks like they just released a new model with even more buttons. Now I’ll never have to use a menu again!

#12

I personally love using the ADVANCED menus in conjunction with my hotkeys,I don’t think I personally can go faster for now using this setup,nevertheless,I’d be glad to have one of those ultra-slick mice…

That said,does anyone here ever thought two mice would be faster,one for camera,second one for standard operations like I’ve seen uised with MarbleClay.

#13

I like the idea of that Speed pad too, hmmm, have to think bout that.

#14

Xtrude. I was playing around with your shortcut layout, and i must say, its great. Wish i thought of it earlier. :hmm:

Hell, i didnt know that wings used F3, F4 and F5. And i didnt hear of those commands before. :surprised

Thanks!:smiley:

#15

Glad to hear it AR, and yea, theres a ton of stuff in Wings once ya really look around and explore just what does what. :slight_smile:

StephanD, I use my setup also in conjunction with highlight temp selection. :slight_smile:

hey guys. new to this forum. i would have been content with browsing had i not come across this thread.

i did not realize the effectiveness of the wings workflow til i assigned hotkeys. it takes awhile to set up but it allows you to work quickly afterwards.

manipulate along:
x = x
y = a
z = z
free = s
normal = d

the move commands have no prefix.
rotate is ctrl + key
scale is shift + key

i assigned tighten, and uniform scale to a hot key as well. “view along x, y, z” i moved to the right side of the keyboard. u can put them werever u want. just make sure its close to the shift key.

same thing with the manipulation keys. doesn’t really matter how u arrange them so long as “ctrl” and “shift” are within reaching distance.

hope this aids some of u.

I use the default keys,… plus the following

F1 Move X verts/edges/faces
F2 Move Y verts/edges/faces
F3 Move Z verts/edges/faces
F4 Move Normal verts/edges/faces

shift-F1 Extrude region X
shift-F2 Extrude region y
shift-F3 Extrude region z
shift-F4 Extrude region normal

F5 and F6 are previous/next edgeloop (moved from defaults)

T for tweak mode

Shift-w toggle edges

Shift-C Collapse edge

Ctrl H Hide selected
Ctrl U Hide Unselected
Ctrl-Shift H Unhide all

Think that’s about it. I like having the different axis controls all in a line, and it’s really smooth to use once you get used to it. I work with my fingers on the F1-F2-F3 keys, so it’s very quick and easy.

Edit: I also use the Max style camera controls since that is the program I am most comfortable with, and I like that method.

#18

My keys are numerous but simple. I set most of them up when I first found Wings (ca 0.98.07b) but I have added things as my workflow developed.

move:

Alt-n move normal
Alt-x move along x axis
Alt-y move on y
Alt-z move on z

Rotate:

Shift-x axis rotate around x
Shift-y axis rotate around y
Shift-z axis rotate around z

Scale:

Alt-s scale uniform
Ctrl-x scale along x axis
Ctrl-y scale on y
Ctrl-z scale on z

Other:

n extrude normal
Shift-n extrude region normal

  •            aim view

Tab toggle work mode (quick shaded)
` (grave accent) toggle smoothed proxy

Of course what your keys are set to isn’t really that important, just that you can remember them long enough to learn them. I was amazed how much faster I was able to work once I learned my hotkeys, now I just wish I could set custom keys in other programs (cough Blender cough).
