Horse + knight

looking really good cartman! nice anatomy

I can not compete with Bryan Y’s excellent and through knowledge of the horse’s anatomy, of course or with usefulness of his advices  , so I’ll only tell that I’m following this project with interest from the beginninig and learning important bits of info myself. Knowing your technical excellence, especially in detailing and texturing, I can’t wait to see the final beast. Not to mention the complete project including the knight!

I’m not sure about the front leg muscles - imho they seem too much deformed and not enough defined - but as I said, I might be wrong, as I’m not expert on horse anatomy. I’ve mostly seen it on TV and in handbooks for artists so far…
Keep up w. the good work.

It’s looking really really good! Given the model’s high quality at this point, and the time invested, I would not hesitate to spend a little bit more time fixing little issues here and there.

Some points:

The facial crest below the eye is not right. It should become more narrow and less pronounced as it swings underneath the eye, curving up just slightly as it wraps around the back bottom part of the eye. An example: http://www.defdesigns.com/P8280055%20-%20Expo%20Flores%20-%20Horse.jpg

The front view of the ears look good, but something is not right on the side view, especially where they connect to the head.

A model of this detail should show its gender, whatever it may be: Pick either a stallion, gelding, or mare.

The top of the pectoral muscles are just not right, in my opinion. Horses vary, but try and study some photos of their front ends.

The forehead, between and above the eyes lacks a little bit of the tendon and muscle structure that should be there, but I’ll forgive you if find it overly difficult, as did I. See photo here for an example: http://e-advancement.csupomona.edu/film/gallery/arabian_horse/images/horse%20show%20Buckingham_jpg.jpg

Start looking at the spine of various horses from the withers to tail, and notice how they vary, and pick one to model the detail there. You’ll find that, depending on the horse, you might want a spine that protrudes up, or a minor indentation running the length of the spine.

Do you think your rear hooves are a little too vertical in front?

In order to outdo everyone else’s horse, have a go at the muscle definition just in front of the horse’s thigh on the horse’s side. It’s a diagonal line which runs from just shy of the horse’s center downwards to where the rear leg joins the body. It is faint, and I’ll show it to you in several photos.

In each photo look about one foot below the back of the saddle (or where the back of the saddle would be), and expect to see a crease running diagonally downwards towards the rear leg:

Eric, that’s an excellent work!
How many tri for this full model?

Could we see a wire of the side view?

I was looking at the beginning of this thread and noticing how this project has slowly come together. I also noticed in one of the original comments I made, I provided a picture. It’s worth taking a look at again, for refinement of the details, such as the facial crest:

Hi Cartman!!

Nice model!! Good details!! Very nice!
I agree with Bryan on the hooves. A little vertical.
And the top profile of the head doesn’t look right. I think it narrows to much. It neads som volume around the mouth, i think. But I am not sure. Can we see some detail pics of the head of the latest version?

Keeping on going with the excelent work!!

#106

Very good link Cartman!! Thanks dude!!
Any updates on your model?

#107

Here is a first render… a quick test and I also tried a bit of fur just to see how it looks.

#108

Hey, it’s looking pretty good!

Some comments:

The lower and back part of the cheek has a few minor lumps on it that could be smoothed.

The neck muscles could be adjusted a little bit. I don’t have references for you, but if you stare at a few sideview horse photos for a few minutes you might figure it out.

Regarding the tail hairs: At the base (top) of the tail, the tail hairs will be short (about 2 to 5 inches), getting to 36" to 50" after that. See photo: http://images.fotosearch.com/bigcomps/corbis/DGT079/CB065827.jpg

Also, here are some good hi-res photos of horses:

Thanks Bryan. I’ll look into the neck muscles. I played a bit with the hair.
