I don’t personally think the image is good enough to be in the showcase section of this forum. That’s my subjective point of view. I am not going to dissect what I think is wrong with it but sometimes you have to accept that not everyone is going to have the same opinion as you and it’s CGSociety’s right to deem an image not good enough for their showcase section. I don’t always agree with their choices, but I believe they are artists with opinions and have the right to say what they like or don’t like.

You’re bringing this up as if this image is the holy grail (excuse the pun) of 3D imagery. That it’s black and white, that someone who doesn’t think is good must be absolutely wrong and that’s the end of it. To me it’s the that it’s simply not good enough to be with the other artwork in the showcase section.

The modern crusader has been done before, and much better IMO. That’s not a judgement on the artist and his other work. Just my opinion about this particular piece and I feel CG Society has every right to choose not to highlight it.

Yeah I don’t see what is here to be so upset about. The image is not that high of quality compared to what is out there these days. Maybe in 2000 this image would of been amazing, right now it is very mediocre.

Hej Veljko, good to see you here, I personally liked Milivoj’s artwork but maybe he should be the one to resolve it with mods.
I’we had similar issue with my latest personal artwork, but Leigh was kind enough to explain me very politely all the reasons why it was rejected.
I’we heard some similar comments from many artists around, and you also had your own observations, so I invested a bit more time, it turns out quite easier to read, and it was accepted.
Yet I didn’t received any award so far ( except evermotion front page and nice comments from few comic book fans ), and not some high recognition anywhere around, so yes it hurts after so many hours I’we spent, but that’s life and we learn even from our fails.
I’m also glad that he received so many other rewards, he should be proud to himself.

Is that your work and you wonder why it wasn’t accepted? It’s not a terrible piece, and it does tick the “finished work” checkbox, but that’s about it. You might want to take a stronger piece than that to argue gallery admission, because it’s generally a rather below-par image.

I think this is an issue about consistancy, not about the quality of people’s work per se. I dont want to post examples, but go look at some of the work that was acepted in the last week or so, and some of it is WAY worse than some of the stuff here that’s been rejected. It just needs to be a little more consistant.

How sad that non-artistic criteria play some role in judging the work sent here.
Even more sad that one can catch a polite suggestion to modify the image in order to make it more “politically correct”.
Censorship has never done any good to art.

Also, one may notice that no new images have been added to Choice and 3D stills galleries since many days till yesterday (I’ve not yet checked for today), and there’s a lot of good material lookable around.
What’s happening? People stop sending? Evaluating requires weeks?

It’s not the crusade inspired imagery that prevented the image to reach the gallery, and there’s been a fair bit of more biased content making it through because it was artistical and/or technically on par.

In short: Read the mods and admin posts again, it doesn’t.

Yep, JacO, I read them carefully, and cannot discard the impression that considerations about “appropriateness”, maybe in their small amount, did contribute in pushing the balance downward.
Moreover, if you read all the posts again, you may find out that I’m not at all alone in speaking about censorship.

How about you refrain from assuming that you know more about how I make decisions than I do? If you actually bother to look through the galleries before making such suggestions, you’ll find a lot of religious content. There are renders of everything from Jesus to crusaders to an entire pantheon of classical gods, because my personal outlook on these matters has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not images get selected. I feel this piece is on the border of appropriateness simply because of the fact that this is an international forum, and there is a slight suggestion of religious righteousness in the image which some people may find uncomfortable, but as I have already stated, this would not have prevented it from being included, because the idea of “some people finding it uncomfortable” is not a sufficient reason to exclude something. Your suggestion that the case might be otherwise is downright offensive as you’re basically suggesting that I am lying. And that, frankly, pisses me off.

Honestly, the way you people look for conspiracies here is absolutely absurd. I’m getting really fed up with it. Why can’t you guys just get your head around the concept of quality control? Myself and at least one other person have pointed out numerous technical and artistic shortcomings of this piece - why do you find it so hard to believe that the image was rejected for these reasons?

I find it absolutely incredible the way people bandy about the word censorship with such careless abandon around here. Do you even know what the word actually means? Please explain how we are censoring anyone here. The work is still in the artist’s portfolio on this site for everyone to see. Do you also go around to art galleries accusing them of censorship because they don’t display everything that gets submitted to them too?

If I wasn’t an admin that had to keep my cool as much as possible, I’d go on a much longer rant here. Because I’ve really reached the end of my tolerance for all these bruised egos. I learned to accept rejection in art school; I think more people would benefit from developing a thicker skin too.

I think this is a pretty cool image actually, more interesting and inventive than most of the work I see in the gallery here. Just goes to show that taste is subjective, and if you ask two different people what they like you will get two different answers.

Of course I don’t challenge your competence and your equanimity. Nor I’m implying that you are lying.
I’m simply trying to stay as close as possible to what you say in your post. There you adfirm to have found the image on the verge of appropriateness. This, joining the technical remarks you advance (which I’m not the least willing to question, although, let me say, I don’t completely agree with) induced me to deem that a small, maybe minimal, consideration of the subject of the image was present as a component of the motivation of your rebuttal.

Obviously, now I fully accept your statement, and I’m sorry to have annoyed you anyway.

As admins and mods you have the right and duty to keep the site policy adherent to what you feel right. Conversely we members and visitors have the right, and perhaps the duty, to point out our dissonances, in a polite and correct way (which I did, I’m still sure). Consider also that the thread got much participation and interest.

Regarding the word censorship, it recurs in several posts, by different writers. I’ve not been the first one to use it, so don’t call me responsible about it.

Wow… It seems like the intelligence of this community has really hit an all time low.

To be blunt, you people are ****ing DUMB. The op’s image is quite frankly shit. It’s so bland as to be almost instantly forgettable. The idea is quite nice, but the execution lacks in every area.

If your image was rejected then make another image. Have you run out of creativity?! You’re an artist for ****s sake.

As much as I like Expose, I have to say it won’t be the first time they’ll feature an image I really really don’t like at all.

I hope you take the expose thing as a victory and drop the issue once and for all, as it is actually getting embarrasing (as said in another post above).

The “finest digital artwork the world has ever seen” is some kind of slogan, I find it pretty silly that you technically believe that piece to be any close to be the “finest” just because it made it into the book.

There, I said it, I’m done with the subject.

Hopefully in the short term future people will quit to be so whiny about galleries and awards.

The words ‘some of’ should be included in the original tag line you quoted, to be true. Yes, ‘some of’ the very best cg illustration is showcased in those books, but there is a wide enough spectrum of quality exhibited overall in them also. Which you may not have noticed.

I don’t get why so many people cry and blow snot bubbles over a gallery rejection. Hell, I had a 3d piece exhibited in 3D World magazine only to have my submission of it, to the 3d gallery here, rejected. :shrug: I found it odd, but didn’t blow nary a snot bubble over it in a thread like this. That was 4 years ago. Hell again, 40% of the work I submitted so far was rejected, years before the bar raising epic.

Let me give you a little secret. If you want to get into the gallery, learn how to game the system. Figure out what’s getting in and do that. :twisted:
After all, getting in the gallery apparently is not about ‘true art’. Face it, getting ‘in’ is about your ego.

What I’m curious about, as an artist/illustrator, is what exactly do you personally find so outstanding about this piece, since there are a number of basic level artistic fixes that could greatly improve the illustration?
